Gallup: Americans’ distrust of the media hits a new high

Whaaaaat? The American public is growing increasingly suspicious that they're being fed a steady stream of waffle by a media establishment that does everything within its power to not only play up Romney's "gaffes," but to tell us in advance exactly how we should feel about them and to steamroll over President Obama's failures, all while more or less glossing over the disastrous goings-on of the world at large? What is the world coming to! From Gallup:

Americans' distrust in the media hit a new high this year, with 60% saying they have little or no trust in the mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. Distrust is up from the past few years, when Americans were already more negative about the media than they had been in years prior to 2004. …

This year’s decline in media trust is driven by independents and Republicans. The 31% and 26%, respectively, who express a great deal or fair amount of trust are record lows and are down significantly from last year. Republicans’ level of trust this year is similar to what they expressed in the fall of 2008, implying that they are especially critical of election coverage.

Trend since 1997: In general, how much trust and confidence do you have in the mass media -- such as newspapers, TV, and radio -- when it comes to reporting the news fully, accurately, and fairly -- a great deal, a fair amount, not very much, or none at all?

Not surprisingly, when broken down by party, Democrats place the greatest trust in the mainstream media with 58 percent feeling a-okay with their news coverage, but only 26 percent of Republicans do. What is interesting, though, is that after independents’ trust in the media fell below the 50-percent mark in 2004, it’s only continued on a downward trajectory, and only 31 of independents today are feeling good about about the media painting a fair, accurate, and complete picture of the current political scene.

What has me really raising my eyebrow (the left one, to be specific), however, is how people replied to the question of whether or not they’re paying particularly close to this presidential-election news cycle.

Trend: Attention to National Political News -- by Party

48 percent of Republicans are following presidential politics closely, but only 39 percent of Democrats are. So, in conjunction with yesterday’s study suggesting that only 15 percent of Democrats believe that recent economic news is mostly poor, and if Democrats are really leading Republicans in the enthusiasm contest… Help me out here, folks: Are the more committed members of the Democratic faithful just in straight-up denial? Kind of like, oh, maybe a media establishment that skews unabashedly liberal and is hell-bent on constantly jabbing the public with less-than-subtle suggestions that Romney-voters should be discouraged and that President Obama has this in the bag? Is reality no longer of any consequence?

Joseph Goebbel’s media is what I call the propaganda arm of Barry Hussein’s thug army of brainwashed non-journalists.

They may distrust the state controlled media but they still make their voter decisions from the 10 to 15 second sound bites they hear on the evening news. It's on the news so it must be true!

Romney should attack the Media as well as Il Douche. Do not allow them to set the agenda, do not allow them to control the narrative. Hit them hard, using quotes, history and have no mercy. Cut off the free booze and food. Kick rotten apples off the Press Wagon. Let ‘em hoof it. These creeps are the enemy and should be treated as such.

After all, what are they going to do, get mad at him? Lie?

Remember how Newt surged when he chewed on that twerp at the S.C.debates. Remember how GHWB pretty much won the election in ‘88 by chewing on Dan Blather on a live interview. Remember how the public loved Norman Schwartzkopf for chewing on that sniveling Media turd in the Desert Storm press conference: “Is that a question or a political statement? (GLARE) Next question!”

They are a sitting duck.

Regular Americans can see the MSM is like a crooked butcher with his hand on the scale. They cannot hide it any longer.

Unless Obama gets re-elected and starts bailing them out I preduct 2013 will bring a flood of dinosaur media bankruptcies and tons of journ-o-list layoffs. They’ve squandered their last asset.

Yes, Maureen Dowd, I WOULD like fries with that, thank you!

So what's the R vs. D breakdown in this poll?

Last evening Brett Baier on Fox News Report pointed out that the NY Times didn’t include a SINGLE mention of Libya in yesterday’s editions.

This was despite the fact that Jay Carney finally acknowledged (agreeing with Congressional testimony presented by the National Counterterrorism Center) that the deadly attack on our Libyan Consulate was “self-evident(ly) a terrorist attack;” and despite the fact that Carney’s sniveling addmission and the NCC testimony was DIRECTLY contradicted by our UN ambassador, our Secretary of State and our brainless, gutless, lying President as well.

It’s Pravda, man. And this is how creeping totalitarianism works.

“They may distrust the state controlled media but they still make their voter decisions from the 10 to 15 second sound bites they hear on the evening news.”

Don’t worry, that is only how they vote when they have money in their pocket (after paying all their bills), a full tank of gas, and a full stomach. Starting the year after his election (in NJ, MA, and VA), the Dems have suffered an increasingly severe string of defeats at the polls. Obama is in for a shock (though I’m sure he and his supporters already have been told how dire his predicament is); he is publicly acting/speaking as though he is reading all the bad news here on Free Republic and knows his tenure is coming to an ignomious end.

They really showed their hand when they simply refused to report what EVERYBODY was seeing all around them; the most blatant case is the inflation people are getting crushed by at the supermarket and gas pump. The trickle-down effect of that is slowly killing other businesses (and families), everybody can see it, and it isn’t mentioned at all; in fact, the talking heads spout such crap as “thankfully there is no inflation”.

Bizarro world!

Finally, we have to listen to Univision to get hard-ball questions to the POTUS.

” Distrust is up from the past few years, “

Just because the media threw away any pretense of objectivity? Just because they no longer even pretend to be fair? Just because they are 98% hard left?

YES!

I was taking a bath one day, and I turned it on in the bathroom. I watch Spanish language programming so that I can practice listening to and understanding it.

I watched Fox, and there was a 20 second mention of the Pope going to Mexico. On Univision, from the top, to 23 minutes in it was all about the Pope, then the rest of the news. I was floored.

This country really is headed into the toilet. The atheists are winning.

You can't trust the media for anything, least of all, politics. Think about it for a second. Just about everyone that I've ever met, no matter how uninformed about stuff in general, will have at least one topic that they really know a lot about. My question is, when this particular topic is covered in the media, do they get it right, or not. I'd wager the vast majority will tell you that they screw it up royally. Extrapolate that a bit. If you can't trust them on this one topic that you are knowledgeable about, why the heck should you trust them on things you're not so well informed about?

Political campaigns is what is keeping the dinosaur media alive. Where else do you think all that political money goes?

The media make money by providing their bosses -advertisers- with liberal spenders, not conservative spenders.

All shows, including the ‘news’, are produced to appeal to liberal spenders: hence liberals.

With the horrible economy the advertisers get more desperate for liberal spenders.
The 47% freeloaders in the country today are a prime advertiser demographic. They have SNAP money for Coke, Pepsi, Oreos and other food luxuries so they make a large and desirable advertiser audience.
And the media do whatever they can to appeal to them instead of the penny-pinching workers.

What percent of a truly representative nationwide sampling poll would consist of inmates from an insane asylum? That should correspond to the poll number for those actually trusting the media.

The problem is they're like an infection or a cockroach infestation. You have to kill the entire colony or they'll just nest and infest another site. Think how ACORN just metastasized.
