Complaints About Automated Calls Up Sharply
Chicago Tribune ^ | September 17, 2012 | Associated Press

Posted on 09/21/2012 4:01:38 PM PDT by Livin_large

So much for silence from telemarketers at the cherished dinner hour, or any other hour of the day.

Complaints to the government are up sharply about unwanted phone solicitations, raising questions about how well the federal "do-not-call" registry is working. The biggest category of complaint: those annoying prerecorded pitches called robocalls that hawk everything from lower credit card interest rates to new windows for your home.

Robert Madison, 43, of Shawnee, Kan., says he gets automated calls almost daily from "Ann, with credit services," offering to lower his interest rates....

The agency said this month that it was mailing refund checks to more than 4,000 consumers nationwide who were caught up in a scam where the telemarketer used robocalls from names like "Heather from card services" to pitch worthless credit card rate reduction programs for an up-front fee. Checks to consumers range from $31 to $1,300 depending on how much was lost.

To file a complaint with the FTC, people can go online to www.ftc.gov or call 888-382-1222 to report their experience for possible enforcement.

We get at least one of these "card services" calls a day...cell phone, home phone, wife's phone.

Ann has called, but my every other day caller is "Rachel, with credit card services.."

It's annoying, it sucks, I thought we had a law against it and a registry, but it doesn't seem to help. If you call a lot of these callers back, they say they are putting you on their "do not call list", but I don't believe they do; furthermore, I was on the national and state Do Not Call Lists in the first place.

I get this one with a pre-recorded foghorn sound at the start. It’s so damn annoying, I want to strangle someone.

goofing on the person calling is somewhat fun if you have the time...I try to string the conversation out as long as I can. “Tell me again how you lower my interest rate?” “I don’t understand?”,”please explain?”, “what will my new rate be?”

Never, ever give them a credit card. But when they ask for it tell them it’s in the other room, and you have to go get it. Put phone down...come back in 2 min. Apologies, you got the wrong card, you need to go back and get the OTHER card and it will just take a few moments.....

I think my record is 13 min. of stringing them along.

What “agency”?

I got a call from ‘Rachel with credit services’. I went through the prompts and got a man on the phone. I explained we were on the do not call list and the guy kept trying to talk over me. Going back and forth, I kept talking, thinking he couldn’t hear me, he screamed.”I hope you get anally raped and get AIDS.”

I asked him if that was how he was conceived and he hung up.

They spoof their number and are virtually untraceable. I could watch the people behind this business splashing in a swimming pool with a plugged in toaster sitting precariously on the edge and not bat an eye.

I wrote about this earlier as I now have a Panasonic cordless phone that has a 100 phone block feature. I am able to block all of these calls. It is wonderful.

Many years ago, before the time of cellphones and wireless I was at home with the flue.

I was upstairs in bed, and the phone just kept ringing and ringing.

Delirious, I stumbled down the stairs to get the phone and was met with a telemarketer.

After hearing some of her spew, I cut her off, said I was not interested and headed back to bed.

I was almost to the top of the stairs when the phone started again!

I turned around and went back down to answer it.
It was the same Gal! She called me back to tell me how rude I was!

This time I was not polite. I read her the riot act and hung up.

Then I collapsed in a puddle on the floor LOL

Damn Telemarketers!

Same here. I get them all the time. I love the new “do not disturb” with the iPhone IOS 6.0 operating system. I’ve even changed my number and it doesn’t stop them.

You’re both wrong. I asked the guy if I could speak to Rachel, and he told me she wasn’t available. I told him I would only deal with her because I thought she was really hot.

He hung up on me. I guess she belongs to him.

I am able to block all of these calls. It is wonderful.

My cellphone usually says something like "Restricted" or "Unavailable." Rachel is special. Some junk phoners I can call and request a removal from their list. When I try to call Rachel from my cell, the phone company usually can't complete the call. And, yes, I've hung on and spoken to the reps--when they figure I'm not a sucker and want off the list, they usually hang up immediately.

Yup, she sure does, at the cost of $3,000 a year to the taxpayer. Here's her picture, by the way...

The FTC.

They oversee and regulate all telemarketing.
