Two Sheboygan boys charged with "callous" murder of elderly woman

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WTAQ) - Bonds of $1 million each were set today for a pair of 13-year-old boys charged as adults with a prosecutor called the “callous” murder of a 78-year-old Sheboygan Falls woman.

Antonio Barbeau and Nathan Paape are charged with party to first-degree intentional homicide. Police said Barbeau’s great-grandmother, Barbara Olson, was killed with a hatchet and a hammer on Monday.

District Attorney Joe DeCecco said Paape’s mother dropped off the boys at Olson’s house – and they were ransacking it when Olson came home and caught them. The DA said the two boys then attacked her, and tried but failed to drag her bloodied body to her car.

DeCecco said the boys then put jewelry and other items in her vehicle and drove it to Sheboygan bowling center – and they left the keys in it, hoping that someone would steal it and then become implicated in Olson’s murder.

The prosecutor then said the boys went to eat pizza – and then bought cleaning wipes to get their fingerprints off the victim’s car.

DeCecco said the boys admitted going to the house with the intent to rob and kill Olson. He said he did not know why they wanted to kill Olson, and would not say why they planned to rob her.

He said the “callousness” of the crime would, “shock and disturb the community.”

The two boys are due back in court October 2nd, when a judge will determine if there’s enough evidence to order trials.

How long can Wisconsin keep them locked up for murder at that age?

They're being charged as adults, so they could get life without a chance for parole, thought the ACLU types would probably complain that was "cruel and unusual punishment." I just hope that if someone were to make that argument, the answer would be that "it's the perfect punishment, since this was a particularly "cruel and unusual" murder.

That’s too easy but you’re allowed to have a wrong guess now and then. At least I’m still in the 97% accurate guessing game. 0.o

Until 21, unless they are tried as adults.

Wonder if they come from a working family or a “needy” family. Instead of breaking down crime statistics by race, I’d like to see a breakdown based on working vs. welfare - I suspect the race numbers would look small by comparison. Whether white, black, oriental, etc., I suspect the largest percentage of crimes are committed by families of those whom we “assist” with our tax dollars. This should be studied so we can make a genuine analysis of whether our tax dollars are actually being spent to subsidize parents who “give back” by providing us with even more criminals and thugs.

These stories aren’t complete unless an anonymous neighbor says “they seemed like such nice boys”

Sounds like some Paape family values being passed on. Civilization is a thin veneer.

“Too bad WI doesn’t have the death penalty though.”

Even among states that have the death penalty, no state executes 13 year olds.

They are being charged as adults though and unless some slick lawyer manages to get that changed to juvenile status, they face life in prison.
