In Wisconsin, high school athletes are complaining about not getting enough to eat each day, due to the skimpy new school lunch menu mandated by the United States Department of Agriculture and First Lady Michelle Obama.
The story we published earlier this week on that subject is unfortunately not unique. Students across the country are complaining about the new school lunch regulations.
Perhaps the real motive is to starve students into slimming down. Just ask students in Pierre, South Dakota who, too, are in an all-out revolt.
"I know a lot of my friends who are just drinking a jug of milk for their lunch. And they are not getting a proper meal," middle school student Samantha Gortmaker told Keloland.com.
Despite the fact that the new regulations have increased the cost of a lunch 20 to 25 cents per plate, its not pleasing students.
Some are throwing away their vegetables while others are adapting to the rules by becoming industrious. In New Bedford, Massachusetts, students have created a black market - for chocolate syrup. The kiddie capitalists are smuggling in bottles of it and selling it by the squeeze, according to SouthCoastToday.com.
Nancy Carvalho, director of food services for New Bedford Public Schools, was quoted as saying that hummus and black bean salads have been tough sells in elementary cafeterias. That means even smaller children are going through the day fighting hunger pains, which can never be considered a good thing.
One government official tried to put the blame on the students.
"One thing I think we need to keep in mind as kids say they're still hungry is that many children aren't used to eating fruits and vegetables at home, much less at school. So it's a change in what they are eating. If they are still hungry, it's that they are not eating all the food that's being offered," USDA Deputy Undersecretary Janey Thornton was quoted as saying.
Ms. Thornton just put her finger on the problem. The government is trying to impose a new diet that children are not accustomed to. Its not reasonable to expect them to either eat what the government deems healthy or go hungry.
Many will opt to go hungry, and thats the governments fault.
Satire, right? I had to look after reading a few paragraphs.
What a shame.
I've done it lately, too. The time lag is so long, you think something went wrong so you click again. As much as I love FR it is the slowest site I use on a regular basis.
My sons started buying two lunches about the 9th grade. It kept them going until after practice each day. When they were old enough to get a driver’s license, they went to their grandmother’s house. Bless her, she fed them all through high school.....my brother’s daughters too....
A lot of inner-city schools will not let the kids leave the building once they are in. When I taught, they had armed police at all doors to keep local drugs 'n thugs out and the kids in.
Also, some don't allow lunches from home.
Agenda 21, get the kiddies used to eating "sustainable" hummus and soy burgers. Mmmm...
Exactly right. The local are more attuned to the needs of the local than unelected, elitist bureaucrats which live hundreds if not thousands of miles away - in the "poorest environment" imaginable, a land of politicians.
" What about fed funding for these schools?"
What about it? Fed funding is just our own money being funneled back to us and we have every right locally to determine how it should be used. The feds have no higher insight or wisdom on how to spend it - to the contrary.
One government official tried to put the blame on the students and Bush.
So who is deciding what is ‘healthy’???
BOXCAR BUTT Michelle Obama?
Multiple room service orders of lobster Michelle Obama???
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!
I am a bit overweight. I was about 135# a few years back & was able to participate in horse events of distance riding 50 miles or more. I have ridden one day 100’s & multiday rides...5 days 250 miles. All while working full time in my own business.
I have good basic health & am doing my daily chores just fine.
With the STROKE OF A PEN, Bill Clinton put my height & weight into the category “OBESE”.
In a blink of an eye—I became OBESE!!!!
I have a friend who is in much better shape than I am. She participats in triathelons & is also a rider. She can ride a 5 day 250 or a one day 100 & place in the top ten without a problem. She raises her own horses & takes care of a herd of about 12 while she also has a full time job. With nothing on but a smile, she weighs over 210## and she is just over 6 feet all.
Trust me, she isn’t anyone you want to choose to arm wrestle with. But under those same criteria & parameters, she is considered overweight & borderline obese.
Neither of us smoke or use drugs or drink alcohol.
I am tired of the government deciding everything on a one size fits all policy.
Michelle Obama can worry about her own hids who are in a very exclusive school in Washington.
She can stay out of the school cafeterias of our kids. Some of these kids have done farm & ranch chores for hours before even getting to school. They are fed well at home, but they are hungry for a refill at lunch.
Geeeez—I was in the public school system in the late 40’s & 50’s in Wisconsin & we NEVER got supplies for free. My parents bought all the notebooks, pencils, erasers, scissors, glue, etc. for all 4 of us kids. I still don’t think that the school system—the taxpayers—should be buying such supplies & handing them out.
IF they are ‘free’ , the kids won’t take care of them.
As for the cost of the kid in school.
It is about $7000 per pupil here in Rural N Nevada.
BUT—That amount jumps to $28,000 if the school officials can get your kid tagged with ANY KIND of ‘learning disability.’
That seems like a great incentive to put a label on your kid.....
Is it still an option in public schools?
Depends what you consider "option". Just talking to my bbf about this yesterday. There are SO many restrictions about what she is "allowed" to make for her childrens school lunches. Even paper lunch bags are "discouraged". They send the children home w/ their paper lunch bags for "recycling" and encourage those thermal reusable ones.
Her boys was stolen, the first one was eaten by their dogs (lol). I told her to invest in a 200 bag of brown paper lunch bags for 2 bucks instead of the expensive reusable ones (she's barely making her mortgage each month).
Of course, their favorite sandwich is banned.....pb&j.
Get the kids out of the government schools.
My bff’s school has now gone “totally green”. Instead of sending children home w/ their homework, the parents now have to go online and PRINT out their homework, everyday.
Her school district is one of those that decided to “bus in” the less unfortunate (ghetto), a 45 minute ride each way, and bus out the fortunate (who’s parents work) to the ghetto schools.
Yes...as is their "cheese sticks".
Looking up research to balance my hormones (peri-menopause), soy has a high concentration of estrogen.
NOT good for the boys....nor girls.
“I heard about this in Chicago. I told the kids to tell the teacher they were responsible enough to bring pencils and that those who were not could go without writing or bring their own damn pencils. I’ll have to see if the morons are doing the same thing this year. Maybe I could get a bunch of pencils made with anti-socialist quotes printed on the pencils or “Karen Lewis is a bloated parasite.”
If you ask, the teacher will say that the pencils need to be shared because of families like “Johnnies” who cannot afford pencils. The proper response to this is...”OK, I would like to visit Johnnies house, if I find no beer, cigarettes, or X-Box’s, I will gladly donate some pencils to his family”
My bff’s school now has banned bottled water. They want them to bring “reusable” water bottles they can fill up at the water fountain.
Starting in third grade I packed my lunch and my sibling’s. We were pretty poor, lunch was a baloney sandwich or peanut butter, and a piece of whatever fruit was in season.
Kids are binning these stupid meals. Check the trash bins for the real story. I like these kind of healthy foods but you cannot force feed them to children
