Leave Romney Be [Attention seeking "lace curtain right")
The American Thinker ^ | September 24, 2012 | Jack Cashill

The other day I received my weekly missive from WallStreetJournal columnist and former Reagan speechwriter Peggy Noonan,in which she informed me and the world that "the Romney campaign has to get turned around." She added helpfully,"This week I called it incompetent, but only because I was being polite. I really meant 'rolling calamity.'" The media loved this column and repeated it widely. Their goal is to depress the Republican vote. Noonan's goal, apparently,is to get attention.

Noonan got a lot of it in October 2008, when she wrote the following giddy nonsense about Barack Obama:

He has within him the possibility to change the direction and tone of American foreign policy, which need changing;his rise will serve as a practical rebuke to the past five years, which need rebuking;his victory would provide a fresh start in a nation in which a fresh start would come as a national relief.

Noonan is hardly unique among what I would call the "lace curtain right." Despite their resources and exposure, they offer no new information. They allow the left to determine what is news and what is not. And they are much more comfortable scolding their shanty right-wing allies than they are scolding their enemies.

I was in Washington Thursday for an Accuracy in Media conference, in which I gave a talk on the subject of lace curtain obstructionism. There I met a high-level strategist who, over drinks, ripped the Romney campaign up and down. When I asked him what he thought of Romney's choice for vice president,he expressed displeasure. He preferred Condoleezza Rice to Paul Ryan, which made me wonder whether he or Noonan or any of these great thought thinkers had met,in the last half-century or so, a Republican who lived west of 495.

All of this put me in mind of George Thomas....

Bravo, Ann Romney! ".............Here's the thing. No candidate is perfect. Romney has areas that he could shore up, certainly. And it is not our place to sacrifice principle in support of any candidate. Encouraging him to take it to Obama in a certain fashion, or offering information that could prove useful to the campaign makes perfect sense to this observer. And if stronger admonishments are in order, perhaps utilizing private channels would be an option. But for heaven's sake, do we have to send gift-wrapped ammunition to Obama and his acolytes in the media? .........."

” He preferred Condoleezza Rice to Paul Ryan, which made me wonder whether he or Noonan or any of these great thought thinkers had met,in the last half-century or so, a Republican who lived west of 495.”

This is a huge problem in the Republican Party in general.

Peggy Noonan is one of those “Pet Conservatives” that the leftists have on a leash and trot out to say nasty things at their “fellow” Conservatives and then get doggie treats from their masters. I don’t give a rats behind what Peggy Noonan thinks!

Good article. Thanks for posting. The ‘elite’ media, including people like Noonan, derive their relevance and stature in life largely from their connection to the ‘circle of importance’ that most drawn to politics want to be part of. This connection allows them to truly believe they are ‘special’ - and this is more important to them than riches. This delusional thinking is nowhere more pervasive than in D.C., in newsrooms, and in the entertainment industry - which is why an alliance has been forged between them.

Incidentally, if Romney had chosen Rice instead of Ryan, the left (and possibly people like Noonan) would have lambasted the choice as a ‘cynical’ ploy to attract black votes away from a black President, an unwise connection to Bush foreign policy, or some other equally derisive slant. You can't appease the left, and thus, Peggy, one should not try.

I just read this and was going to post, but you beat me to it. Good article and message. Noonan went wobbly a long time ago. Kristol's comments were more disturbing and stupid.

No one here likes it, but Romney's our candidate. Incredibly it was the likes of Noonan/Kristol who gave Romney the support he needed in the primaries. Now, they're giving aid to the enemy. Meh!

I never miss an opportunity to dish Condeleeza Rice. The dullest woman in the world and, possibly, the worst piano player in the world. Paul Ryan’s terrific!
