It's Not Just the Economy, Stupid!
Jewish World Review ^ | 25Sept12 | Dennis Prager

Posted on 09/24/2012 9:33:18 PM PDT by ReformationFan

Given the awful state of the American economy, featuring a four-year high unemployment rate and an increasingly crushing national debt ...

Given that America is at least as hated in the Muslim world as it was when George W. Bush was president — despite the Obama policy of obsequious rhetoric directed toward that world ...

Given the virtually unprecedented tension between the United States and Israel, its closest ally in the Middle East ...

Given the complete failure of sanctions to stop Iran from its pursuit of an atom bomb ...

Given the spectacle of European financial collapse — and very possibly the end of the Euro — owing to the inevitable failure of the very type of welfare state that the president and the Democratic Party advocate ...

Given the lack of any of the promised progress in unifying America politically and racially (if anything, the country is more divided than ever) ...

Given the huge growth in the number of Americans receiving payments from the government, and the growth in the amount of those payments ...

a Republican candidate should not merely win in the November elections, he should win in a landslide.

Yet, polls show the candidates more or less tied nationally and President Obama winning in most "battleground" states.

Assuming the polls are valid, how is one to explain this?

There are two interrelated explanations.

1. The campaign has focused almost exclusively on the unemployment rate, on "jobs" and "job creation."

2. Many Republicans and many conservatives — including, too often, Mitt Romney — do not know how to make the case for conservative values.

Yes, Americans want a president who can fix the economy. But even more so they want a president who has a vision for the country.

Unfortunately, with the exception of Ronald

But the Left will get “free” healthcare, food stamps, birth control, and not have to worry about applying for citizenship because they’ll get free amnesty, and may not have to even worry about repaying much of their collgee loans. Their Messiah has the media and the celebrities under his thumb and can do no wrong.

Prager is out of ideas too, because too many takers don’t pay taxes and they don’t care about handing the debt to their children and grandchildren: all too often, welfare breeds welfare.

Our nation is split, and we’re about to get a reality check for all the chips, to see whether our side still holds the moral majority.

Spot on. His ideas and comments, though true, fall on deaf ears. I was speaking with a black, single mother about the Chicago Teacher strike. She was upset about having to leave her kids home alone so she could work, but still supported the strikers.

None of the arguments I made about the situation had any effect on her. Praeger could talk to her until he was blue in the face and she’d still pull for Obama. We have a significant population that just won’t ever get it.

The inability to reason with people like her, is as sickening and sad as it’s disgusting and maddening, isn’t it?

It’s as though we are failing in our mission, but we’re not. She’s stuck in stupid and quite happy to stay there. She’s working and thinks she’s doing all right. Her kids are stuck in Chicago’s horrid public schools and she sided with the overpaid teachers!

No amount of taxpayer money will ever cure that ignorance and stupidity because it starts at home with the parents.

As we spoke and both presented our “facts” hers were consistently simplistic and only considered what was seen. It is the broken windows theory. If only we could learn from history, but I doubt she’d ever read Bastiat.

You are absolutely correct sir,America is Over,Not even the Republican Candidate can articulate Traditional American Values. Im all for Business, and all that, but talk to the guy who carries a Lunch Bag about Families that are being destroyed, about going into the doctors office where a Bureaucrat is going to make the decision whether you get care or not, about looking at your kids at Christmas,if we can still celebrate or even mention it,and tell them no gifts this year, dad has no job, cant drive to grandmas, cant afford the Gas,No turkey too expensive.

"1. The campaign has focused almost exclusively on the unemployment rate, on "jobs" and "job creation."

And yet it has said almost nothing. Vote for Romney because Hope and Change some more.

"2. Many Republicans and many conservatives — including, too often, Mitt Romney — do not know how to make the case for conservative values. "

Perhaps it would help if the Republicans has actually nominated a conservative.

Prager's point is well taken, and the Romney campaign should refocus on the point being made earlier that our life, rights, and the liberty to enjoy them come from the Creator, making them inherent, joined, and, therefore, unalienable.

"The God who gave us life, gave us liberty at the same time: the hand of force may destroy, but cannot disjoin them."

When citizens understand that a government which is allowed to assume the power to decide who has the right to make life and death decisions, when government is seen to be the grantor of rights, then that life and those rights become "alienable" and not secure.

In February 2010, George Weigel said, in a Paris speech:

". . . the challenge we face today is to recognize, with John Paul II and Cardinal Lustiger, that Europe (and indeed the entire West) is suffering from a false story about itself, and about the relationship of biblical religion to its formation and its history.”

Amen!!

America, in particular, has allowed the progressive movement to effectively erase from its collective memory the remarkable foundation of ideas which produced the season of liberty it enjoyed for over 200 years. It, too, has embraced a "false story about itself," because of that censorship.

Technology has now outpaced these censors, however, and what has been erased can be instantly restored, with the click of a mouse.

Is Divine Providence at work to outwit the enemies of liberty? The collection of thinkers and liberty lovers who appeared at the same time on the same relatively small area of land in America in the late 1700's were able to write and speak the ideas of liberty, derived from centuries of wisdom literature, and to capsulize those ideas in documents which, if relied upon today, could continue to expand liberty and prosperity.

Their ideas are just as revolutionary today as they were then, and they are accessible in a way never possible before.

John Quincy Adams outlined the nation's noble history in his 1839 "Jubilee" Address in NYC and concluded that address with these words:

"Fellow-citizens, the ark of your covenant is the Declaration of independence. Your Mount Ebal, is the confederacy of separate state sovereignties, and your Mount Gerizim is the Constitution of the United States. In that scene of tremendous and awful solemnity, narrated in the Holy Scriptures, there is not a curse pronounced against the people, upon Mount Ebal, not a blessing promised them upon Mount Gerizim, which your posterity may not suffer or enjoy, from your and their adherence to, or departure from, the principles of the Declaration of Independence, practically interwoven in the Constitution of the United States. Lay up these principles, then, in your hearts, and in your souls - bind them for signs upon your hands, that they may be as frontlets between your eyes - teach them to your children, speaking of them when sitting in your houses, when walking by the way, when lying down and when rising up - write them upon the doorplates of your houses, and upon your gates - cling to them as to the issues of life - adhere to them as to the cords of your eternal salvation. So may your children's children at the next return of this day of jubilee, after a full century of experience under your national Constitution, celebrate it again in the full enjoyment of all the blessings recognized by you in the commemoration of this day, and of all the blessings promised to the children of Israel upon Mount Gerizim, as the reward of obedience to the law of God."

What President, Senator, or Congressman today has the courage to declare what this man who served under that Constitution in many capacities, including as President and, until his death, as Congressman declared in New York City on that day in 1839?
