The Iranian government warned its citizens Wednesday to beware of Canada, claiming Iranphobia had gripped the nation since Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird shut down Irans embassy in Ottawa.
According to the state-controlled Islamic Republic News Agency, Irans foreign ministry issued a statement cautioning that the Canadian government had provided the atmosphere for anti-Iranian groups and lobbies.
If Iranians visit Canada they risked arrest, attacks, expulsion and murder, it said, adding Iranians were being deprived of their basic rights and police lacked the necessary will to probe crimes against committed the Iranians.
The missive is the latest swipe at Canada to appear in Irans tightly controlled press whose reports are sometimes difficult to distinguish from satire since Canada suspended relations with the Islamic regime.
It appears to be a response to a Department of Foreign Affairs travel warning that advised against all travel to Iran, warning Canadians they will be closely watched and could face heightened scrutiny due to Iranian irritation over the closure of Canadas embassy.
