FARGO, N.D. -- Thousands of logos depicting an American Indian warrior will remain inside the University of North Dakota's hockey and basketball arenas under a reworked agreement announced Wednesday by the NCAA and the state's attorney general.

The agreement comes in a decades-old controversy that has included lawsuits, legislation, NCAA threats and a statewide vote about whether the school's Fighting Sioux nickname and Indian-head logo were insensitive to local tribes.

The state Board of Higher Education had ordered the school this summer to drop the nickname and moniker to abide by a 2007 agreement with the NCAA. But that plan called for all Sioux logos to be removed from the two arenas, which have thousands of the logos -- including on brass medallions on chairs and a 10-foot sketch in the hockey arena's granite floor.

LOL. in other words, it would have cost too much to remove all those logos.

The state school board members are probably getting tired of the hate calls from the Sioux who are POd that knowledge of their existence is to be wiped away from the University grounds.

Eventually they may have to sacrifice somebody ~ they've done that before. I wouldn't mess with those people like this.

Don’t stop with athletic teams. Change town names, street names, rivers, mountains, anything indian. See how long it takes before the tribes start to whine about being a forgotten people.

Fighting Sioux?Maybe they should be renamed to the Fighting Squaws.Since they caved in so easily.

They should never caved in because there is nothing hatefull about that name.

I’m wondering why Fargo ND is on the dateline since UND is 80 miles away in Grand Forks. Plus, screww the NCAA which is headquartered in INDIANapolis, INDIANa.

UND really should change their mascot to the Fighting Whities just to p.o. the NCAA.
