I was using the more contemporary Democrats as examples, but you are correct that progressives, in historical generality, are the reason for all of this. Thank you for the correction.
If we were drawing a
Venn Diagram, the set of contemporary Democrats would be almost entirely a subset of Progressives, and an unpleasantly large portion of the set of Republicans would also be a subset of Progressives.
