There’s not even a constitutional requirement for a “popular” vote.

The election is solely dependent on the Electoral College; it’s up to the states to decide how they select their delegates to that body.

That’s what I know. I don’t get this “suspend the election” idea. If push comes to shove for whatever unknowable reason the “election” can be held in the state capitols and the results transmitted to the House of Representatives.
