That was the reason BOTH SEALS were there. They were not part of embassy security...although they did try to save the ambassador’s life.

I read that the Seals were there to “protect” information that was stored in the Benghazi Consulate, information about contacts that the administration had worked with during the Libyan fighting. I guess this could mean tracking weapons.
