A large majority of likely voters believes all Americans should pay some federal income tax -- even if it is as little as one percent of what they make.
Seventy-nine percent say everyone should pay something, according to a Fox News poll released Thursday. That includes 85 percent of Republicans, 83 percent of independents and 71 percent of Democrats.
According to the IRS, last year approximately 41 percent of tax filers did not pay federal income tax. The Tax Policy Center estimates that will increase to 46 percent this year.
Most voters (73 percent) are at least somewhat familiar with the widely-broadcast videotape of Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney talking about 47 percent of Americans and the number of people paying no federal income tax. Romney also talks about his concern that the country is becoming an entitlement society and that many are too dependent on government. Journalists and pundits speculated the tape would damage Romneys campaign. Yet a 63-percent majority thinks the substance of Romneys comment about dependence on government is mostly (36 percent) or somewhat true (27 percent).
Three out of four voters believes the average American is at least somewhat dependent on government (76 percent), while less than a third says they personally are (31 percent).

I agree. There should be a minimum tax that everyone should have to pay regardless of income.
That or remove the vote from those who do not pay taxes.
No taxation without representation should also include no representation without taxation!
21% also say they shouldn’t have to pay for their cellphones.
Amen. Everyone needs skin in the game. Even if it is $100 minimum.
I would bw more than happy to pay more in taxes. Thar being said it should not go for research on the drinking habits of chinese whores. It should not go to foreign governments that take our money and use it to attack us
I agree, if we must have a tax increase, I think it should be perhaps 1/2 % on first dollar, no exemptions.
That way everyone would have “skin in the game” as BigEars likes to say.
63% agree with Romney. He should do what Rush said today. use in a stump speech that we are all “victims” of Obama’s economic policies.
Agree 1,000%.Everyone over the age of 18 with total income above $500 (adjusted only for inflation) should pay *something*...even if it’s only $25.No representation without taxation!
Amen!

This is just more evidence that conservatives need to quit poll watching and just keep the faith until Nov 6. The majority of people are sick of the status quo and want change. The news media is trying so so hard to discourage us and make us think that Obama has a commanding lead. It will get worse. Just know that they are desperate and will say and do anything trying to salvage the broken dreams of Obama. It’s not going to happen, because he cannot change. He is all about himself and his self image is all he cares about. Anyone that thinks he has any interest in their well being is a fool. I think there are far fewer fools today than there were in 2008 and I think Nov 6th will prove it.
Agree something has to be done. Some reform is needed.
THIS administration has shown us all the extent the Fed is funded by over taxation be it on the citizens, business, and/or resources simply in the manner in which they have brazenly flaunted their abuse of those monies confiscated.
If the government must find ways to spend our hard earned money then they damned well don’t need it.
Only the money necessary to fund the Constitutional functions of the Federal Government, and a small reserve is necessary for the Federal Government to collect, and that should be from the States, not the citizens, nor the businesses of the citizens, nor should the Fed have the right to tax, assess, or otherwise the resources of the States.
This whole thing has gotten out of perspective thanks to weasel representation be it Left, or Right.
Then there are those who PAY NO TAX and RECEIVE A REFUND.
I wonder how many of those people who think that everyone should pay some income tax have a negative tax liability, but think that it’s just a refund that they deserve, without understanding what a negative tax liability is.
Yep. I’m expressing a similar sentiment right after your post.
Actually, I’m of the opposite opinion. I think that no Americans should pay income tax, since it’s a really bad system and arguably unconstitutional. Still, if we are going to be forced to pay it, then it should be equally levied on everyone who makes an income.
all should pay—even if its like 1 or 2% of that they make—can’t pay? then they should work for the government to work off their debt! Clean trails in parks, sweep the roads, pick up trash, Pain out graffiti. etc...
Bingo! If we must be taxed, it should be situation-specific vs. across the board. The situations should be voted on by those in the arena being affected by the "good that the government wants to do for the little peeples". Wouldn't take long for the government to lean out and we would only be getting taxed for actual societal necessities and have a much better sense of where our money was being used - no more egotistical monuments to those who "govern".
Alas this cannot exist in a large population with many members who care more for power over other people as the path to wealth or for its own sake. Installing that tax system and cutting out the regulation would extend the run of America the Richest and Strongest for another generation or so, though. If we did that over the next four years, the Collapse that is already baked in the cake would be a short sharp event that would be a subject of anecdotes for a few years. It wouldn't last long enough for people to actually starve. The collapse we seem determined to have will probably include some measure of old time famine.
