RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A nurses' assistant at a Virginia nursing home will go to prison for selling wedding rings that were stripped from the fingers of veterans under her care.

24-year-old Ashley Michelle Sweeney of Franklin County was sentenced to five years by a Roanoke court.

Sweeney said she pawned four wedding bands taken from Virginia veterans in order to support her drug addiction.

She was ordered never to work as a nurse or nurses' assistant again.

You would think...but she probably knew someone at the facility in order to get the job. Many get jobs through a connection or referral. When I had a larger office, engineers would suggest their friends; in every case, it worked well for the firm but I have heard some pretty bad stories from other professionals.

I don’t think she will fare well in prison.
Even criminals have some patriotism............

I’d be surprised if she gets a prison sentence. She is young, pretty and most importantly female. The usual Female Discount in Sentencing will likely protect her as it does so many women.

Here’s a local article on this case when the defendant originally pled guilty:

There were 2 women involved with the thefts. It’s odd the current crop of articles makes no mention of that fact. The 2 thieves’ photos are in post #2 of the article linked above.

” The usual Female Discount in Sentencing will likely protect her as it does so many women.”

Yes, feminists certainly don’t mind this inequality. Were I a judge, the law would be applied equally to all, except if a woman started crying to gain sympathy. Then I’d add five years to the sentence for seeking to manipulate the process.

“Other nurses described them as being always together, even when they were not assigned to the same room,” he said.

I don’t think so. I think in this case, if you hear hoofbeats, you’re not hearing a zebra. You might be hearing a jackass, however.
