Linda Ronstadt - First Cut is the Deepest
Since I brought up Tori Amos in comparing Ingrid Michaelson to her, I thought I'd throw one in.

There's a similarity of style and technique, but the personae couldn't be different. Tori Amos is far more in your face with a certain slightly warped fury. I wonder if she's ever made peace with her fundamentalist father or if she's still lashing out? Regardless, that woman always could make some amazing sounds.
Back to Ingrid Michaelson for one last song before I turn in, if she can be described as having had a “hit” this would be it:

Sweet, folky harmony, catchy tune in general. It was picked up by Old Navy for one of their commercials and proved very popular, crossing over to commercial airplay. This is the “official” music video, strange, kind of a goth version of “Carrie” with clowns.
