In the last forty years, 0.0 people have been killed by radiation releases from American commercial nuclear reactors. In that period coal has killed approximately 2,000,000. Considering the treatment of the two sources in the press and popular imagination, I believe any fair minded person would agree that nuclear power has been demonized.

There’s no way to know for sure that 0.0 people have been affected negatively by radioactive fallout, because cancers take years to evolve - and cancer is rampant in the country and the world today. It can be pinned on anything, and is. - Cigarettes have been demonized through statistics; but if people would raise their own tobacco free of poisons, and roll themselves a few of their own ciggies, it could work. -

Having said that; nuclear power’s okay with me, just NIMBY preferably. Oh, and the nuclear industry needs to send out mature scientists to explain nuclear waste storage, etc. - Back in the 70’s, they recruited cute teenybopper hotties to do PR for nuclear power. (Cousin was one of them; and was most annoying - treated me like I was stupid for asking a perfectly logical question about storage. She said, “Oh, they’ll figger that out when the time comes!” - So, they counted on cute T&A to answer difficult questions.

Well as far as the Japanese reactors go; Don't build your reactors an active fault line! Apparently this was know and the utility was warned that it was a poor idea to build there. They did it anyway, gambling that the earthquake probability was low. My view is 'Hello your whole civilization is sitting on a series of volcanic islands'. What about this do you not understand?'

There were safer places to put the reactors, they deliberately chose not to do that.

Please note the French get 70%- 90% of the electrical power from nuclear energy. As far as we can tell they have no problems.

As far as Chernobyl goes there a number of things

1. Out of date, acknowledged by the US Nuclear Power Industry dangerous reactor design. Had been viewed as obsolete since the early 1950s.

2. And this is hard to verify; it is said that the operators tried to so something screwy with the reactor that went critical. They did something that drove it rapidly into the critical stage. There are rumors that they were ordered to do some “experiments” in how the reactor might be used to make “weapons grade” fissionable material. The “authorities” completely ignored the fact that a reactor was not designed to do that. Remember in a totalitarian state you do what you are told, you don't argue with the “higher ups”.

Joe Biden makes Sarah Palin look like a Professor of Astrophysics.

The Lefties simply cannot tolerate a woman who is actually female and conservative.

That’s just it; “don’t build your reactors on an active fault line!” - A good rule of thumb; it’s just that any time a choice is presented to liberals in government, crooked politicians who own some land, or have donors who own some land on a faultline - to heck with common sense when they’re presented with enough money. Oh, and “scientists” to testify that anything is okay are a dime a dozen when those types of things are at stake. - To them, a certain amount of “casualties” are perfectly acceptable percentage wise.

Of course, I live where we have hydroelectric power and also a wood stove and a forest on our land; so I guess my perspective is from that angle.

Don't know for sure if as you described happened. Again the French almost exclusively get their electric power from nuclear reactors. Little to no serious seismic activity on the interior continent of Europe. (The Mediterranean is another story!)

The LDP (the Japanese party that has been almost exclusively in power since the US occupation!) has been accused for years of the activity you described.

Of course this proves as we all know that power corrupts, any political party that is granted a near permanent monopoly of power will if it suits them bully, cheat, be stupid and steal.

That's why we desperately need term limits here in the US from city council to county commissioner to State House to Congress.

The rise in cancer rates can be explained by demographics and antibiotics.

About half of all Americans who died in the 19th Century died of tuberculosis. Everybody dies of something. As the rates or mortality from infectious disease fall, and longevity increases, lots of people who would have died from other things, die from cancer. In addition, the lower rates of smoking mean fewer people are dying from heart disease, many of them will succumb to cancer, just not lung cancer. These facts are not debatable. There is no significant increase in the occurrence of cancer in any cohort group, just more people living long enough to get it.

The last hundred years have seen incredible increases in the standard of living and longevity, almost all of it due to increased industrialization.

Just like Pelosi warned us that we would lose 500 million jobs without the stimulus. (We only have about 150 million employed in this country)
