Schwarzenegger: Shriver Changed Tune on Recall Run (Also" Rove Was an Idiot)
NBC Miami ^ | Saturday, Sep 29, 2012 | MICHAEL R. BLOOD

Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

It probably would have been better for Schwarzenegger to stay out. He knew what had to be done but after being stymied in his first attempts, not enough determination to fix California. In the end the rot proceeded just as fast.

“He asks, “How could Rove have been so wrong?”

Rove’s office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment”

Hehehehe. I concur. Rove is an idiot.

Bush and Rove took over the California Republican Party and installed their own chairman at that time. He basically wrecked the party, and Arnie finished the job during his time as Governor Spend & Spend.

They were furious because their previous left-wing Rino candidate for governor was defeated 2-1 in the primaries by Bill Simon. So, they withdrew all their support and funding from Simon and let him go down to defeat—by 3%. If they had not done that, Simon would have won, and would have been an excellent governor, who turned things around and restored the party’s reputation from one fiasco after another.

Simon had strong moral values and principles, and plenty of real business experience. So they threw him to the dogs. And California was thrown to the dogs as a result. It’s unlikely that the GOP can ever win there again.

Amazing he was able to write a book. Didn't he have a tumor?

Rove is an idiot.

Arnold is a much bigger one, IMO.

Where does it state in the article that Rove was an idiot.

Being "wrong" in Schwarzenegger's opinion does not make anyone "an idiot".

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions

So she relented, and instead he was horny for the rest of their marriage.

One-note Rove; thinks he's a genius because plays to the center. It would never occur to him to move the center to the right. He doesn't know how to do it.

No, I was the one calling Rove and idiot. Well, he was wrong, but it was mostly because he didn’t want the recall to happen. After Riordan lost the primary, the top Republicans created a Republicans for Davis group. There was supposed to be an investigation, but strangely it never happened.

Please! Some people here were talking about Simon as the "next Ronald Reagan" but he ran a terrible campaign. Simon was so bad an alternative he lost to governor recalled shortly after that election.

The GOP brand is dead in CA. My recommendation is infiltration of the Democrat Party and move it towards the center because in many places across CA the "top two" will be Democrats.

A lot of Freepers trashed Simon at the time. But he was a stellar candidate. The problem was that the left wing press attacked him nonstop, a judge accused him of business crimes (but dropped the false charges shortly after the election), Bush refused to support him or appear for him, the GOP refused to give him any money, and he was faced with the problem of running against a full funded campaign and a lying press without any funds of his own to answer back, except what he could raise from a few personal donors.

Even the California GOP withheld funds from him, and did what the could to ensure his defeat, because he threatened their pork. It takes a lot of money to run in California, especially if the media are all against you. And Simon was denied the usual funding.
