N.J. High School Students Planning Cafeteria Boycott To Protest Obama Guidelines

Parsippany Hills Students Ask, Why Should We Pay For The Obese's Problems? ------

Students at Parsippany Hills High School held a strategy session on Thursday to discuss a potential lunch strike, on Friday, over what they have called inadequately sized meals.

“This year you’re eating lunch and you’re like ‘Did I even eat?’ You’re not even full,” senior Brandon Faris told CBS 2′s Derricke Dennis.

New federal guidelines stemming from first lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign have resulted in limits on protein and bread, and an increase in vegetables and fruits. The changes have also come at an increased cost.

All of it has also sparked a student campaign that has included online parody videos of students falling sleep in class and performing sluggishly in sports.

They hope to further their efforts with a cafeteria boycott that will cost the school money, and students like Faris said they want to know why they are paying the price for other people’s problems.

“If somebody’s obese why should someone like me who’s not obese have to suffer, and eat a small meal when I’d rather have a bigger meal?” he said.

Members of the food service industry told CBS 2 that new federal guidelines have caused a significant shift in portion size.

“There’s a lot less turkey on the sandwich, there’s 33 percent less turkey and the size of the bread has been reduced by a third,” explained Mark Vidovich, who runs Pomptonian Food Service.

The changes have caused some parents to step in and subsidize the small school lunches with brown bag meals from home.

“I certainly don’t want him to feel hungry,” said Kelly Caccavele, a parent of a Parsippany Hills student.

Romney should talk about this at his rallies. Liberals do not want to give up the fat and the sugar! And neither do I!

Yes. The concept is called “a compelling government interest”. Post Obamacare there will be a compelling government interest in almost every aspect of our lives.

If you’re feeling hungry, after you eat, you’ve been eating too many carbs.

Or you might just be a teenage boy.

For those of you unfamiliar with the Garden State, Parsippany Hills needs a ''school lunch'' program like Beverly Hills needs The Salvation Army. Seems to me that in pretty much all cases, with some exceptions in some districts, in public schools around the country lunch programs are a waste of food and money. Is it really that much of a problem for kids to brown bag it?

No. Extortion is ‘’pay up or else’’. This is more like a’ kick back’’.

I see this as “you follow our rules” or “you don’t get dollars”. Isn’t that extortion?

This sounds like a prison protest...The inmates of an police state institution making demands on their keepers. Are we in America still? Why are people puting their children in police state custody and calling it school?

Why would local school district lunch menus be constrained by federal guidelines? Is that blackmail, extortion, or some other nefarious sounding criminal enterprise?

It's the dark side and two very evil words: Federal funds

The new guidelines are LOW FAT. The protein portions are insanely low for growing males.

When I was a young mom, my son’s doctor told me that he’d found something that was an effective ‘cure’ for boys with ADD.

He said that young males (around age 7-9) became naturally more active for a few years in order to thicken bone and build muscle in preparation for their teenage growth spurt.

He said that it felt like an all-over need to ‘stretch’ that never went away. The only thing that relieved that feeling was movement.

He started having moms send their boys out for a run, jumping jacks, pushups, etc for 20-30 minutes before school. He also recommended a diet high in protein, calcium and magnesium to promote muscle and bone growth.

I did this with my son while he was homeschooling. During the day, I’d notice him squirming and losing concentration and I’d send him out to run laps around the building. (Always a fun, positive thing. Not punitive at all.)

After I did this, it went from a four hour battle of wills to get him to do his math to 30-60 minutes of getting it done and moving on.

That’s exactly right. I don’t have a problem with what these kids are doing, but their efforts would probably be better directed elsewhere — like having that school lunch program shut down entirely.

Now that I think about it, you’re right. It’s a kick-back. If anyone is getting extorted, it’s the taxpayer...

Classic extortion : “Nice place ya got here pal. Be a shame if it burnt down now, wouldn’t ya say? I want 500 a week or it does and you with it, get me?’’
