NJ School District Cuts Portions for Students $3 Behind on Lunch Payment

CALIFON, N.J. – It’s bad enough that school children across the nation are going hungry on the skimpy portions offered through the Michelle Obama lunch menu.

At the Tewksbury school district in New Jersey, children who fall $3.10 behind on their food payments get one hard-boiled egg, a package of crackers and a carton of milk for lunch.

The Tewksbury district consists of two schools, one for grades K-4 and one for grades 5-8. Lunches at the school cost $2.40 per day. That means children are only allowed to fall one day behind in their lunch payments before getting stuck with the egg special.

The lunches at Tewksbury, like most in schools across the nation, are subsidized by the federal government.

Frankly, we’re confused. We thought the feds provide low-cost school lunches because many children come from impoverished homes where the food budget is tight, or from homes where meals are not prepared on a regular basis. The government wants to make sure every kid receives proper nutrition and the dignity that comes with eating a full lunch with classmates.

But at Tewksbury, kids who fall a day behind in their payments are left to gnaw on hard-boiled eggs while their friends eat the full serving on the menu. Apparently school officials are willing to humiliate children into coughing up three dollars and ten cents.

I will gladly contribute tax money to help pay for lunches of children of parents who:

1) Do not have any alcohol or tobacco in the house
2) Do not have cable TV or a smart phone
3) Do not have an X-Box or similar system

Pay you damn bills! That is what people do. Get your parents to stop being deadbeats. So sick of this freebie mentality.

I bet a lot of these "freebie mentality" folks pay some hefty property taxes that support the freakin' pubic (not a typo) schools. What do you say?

You do understand that children in most districts cannot bring food to school anymore.

Most? Are you sure about that? One New Jersey High School just had a 1000 student cafeteria boycott. They all brown-bagged their lunch.

Ironically, it’s not such a bad lunch, though it is short on calories for athletic types.

I do seem to remember an event in NC recently where a child’s lunch was confiscated due to the fact the food police disapproved. Maybe it is more regional.

I personally would never stand for my child being hungry when in the care of so-called educators. I would arrange to arrive at school and feed them myself if it came to it.

NJ students get one hard-boiled egg, a package of crackers and a carton of milk for lunch. That is near Allied pilots/soldiers held in German/Japanese POW, or Nazi Concentration Camp Rations.

What happened to a peanut butter sandwich, apple, maybe box of raisins in a brown paper bag, only need to purchase a container of milk. Guess parents are to damn lazy to get their fat asses out of bed to make the kids lunch.

They can't bring their own lunch? Incredible...

The thing that most seem to be missing is the this only affects those that are actually paying for their lunches, not the kids that get "free"lunchs" i.e. at no cost to the family but paid for by the taxpayers.

Chances are that if they are paying for the lunch they are "makers" i.e. taxpayers and are already paying for the "free" lunches for others.

For those of you out there who don't know New Jersey, Tewksbury Twp. is one of the wealthiest zip codes in the United States. Median household income is more than $150,000 -- and the average is much higher when you consider the fabulous wealth of some of its residents. Notable current and former residents of Tewksbury include actor James Gandolfini, former New Jersey governor Christine Todd Whitman, actor/comedian Joe Piscopo, and Robert Wood (Woody) Johnson (heir of the Johnson & Johnson fortune and owner of the New York Jets).

I just checked a local real estate website, and there are currently 95 listings in Tewksbury with an estimated median price of $819,500.

Forget about a school lunch program ... I'm wondering how many people in that town even send their kids to public schools at all.

Those parents don’t pay any higher property tax rates than the non-parents in their district. You want to jack up yet again the goodies that they get from other taxpayers for having kids in the school system?

“Several kids told her that a fifth-grade boy had been reduced to eating the miniscule lunch, and all of his classmates knew about it.

““It’s a huge humiliation for a kid,” said Bischoff, who said she was stunned when she learned about the new policy. “That something that will probably stick with him the rest of his life.””

If eating a hard-boiled egg one day because your parents didn’t send in your lunch money is enough to “scar [you] for life,” you have been raised the wrong way.

Children who are “poor enough” get free lunches. If you are not “poor enough,” you are “rich” and therefore must pay for your lunch and the poor kids’ lunches. If you do not pay up, you are selfish and will be starved and publicly shamed until you comply. The “poor” kid will still get a full, free lunch.

What liberal mecca is that? Certainly not the case here in Indiana.
