President Obama and Mitt Romney must deliver to crucial undecided voters in Wednesday's debate

WASHINGTON — With a handful of genuinely undecided voters holding sway in a tight race, Wednesday’s Denver debate will likely determine the next President.

One way or another, debates are almost always decisive. Just ask Texas Gov. Rick (Oops) Perry — who couldn’t remember a cabinet agency he’d shut down in this year’s GOP primaries — or veterans of Gerald R. Ford’s 1976 campaign.

At the second debate, in San Francisco, Ford made a lethal unforced error, declaring, “I don’t believe that the Poles consider themselves dominated by the Soviet Union.”

The first question asked at a postdebate press conference was how many Soviet divisions were stationed in Poland.

Five, Ford national security adviser Brent Scowcroft glumly replied.

It took two days for campaign aides to persuade Ford to clarify (grudgingly) his mistake, halting his come-from-behind momentum and reinforcing Jimmy Carter’s claim Ford was a weak foreign policy President.

As Barack Obama and Mitt Romney fine-tune their strategies after weeks of skull sessions and mock debates, Ford’s misstep is a reminder that in the television era with millions watching, debates are more often a pitfall to be avoided than an opportunity to be exploited.

“Obama is already President and most people think Romney is qualified to be President, so it comes down to sidestepping a killer mistake or sound bite,” a former senior aide to a Republican President said.

Threading that needle places a greater burden on Romney, who’s trailing in the polls and has to chop Obama down to size without exacerbating his own negatives.

“Romney has two big problems,” Georgetown University’s Stephen Wayne said. “He’s got to move to the center without alienating his base, and he has to demonstrate warmth and caring while criticizing Obama. That will be hard to do.”

For all their meticulous preparation, debaters

Oh BS. Pure drivel. Both Bush in 2004 and Reagan in 1980 had disastrous 1st debates.

The story line on the debate is all ready being spun. Obama did better then expected while Romney stumbled badly. Obama comes out of the 1st debate looking unbeatable.

Then they will rush out some push polling to validate that story line.

Since 1988 they have NEVER declared the GOP candidate the winner at any of these circuses. As far as the media is concerned nothing will be changed by these debates. Obama will be declared the victor all Oct the same way he was all Sept.

Must? BS.

“Romney has two big problems,” Georgetown University’s Stephen Wayne said. “He’s got to move to the center without alienating his base, and he has to demonstrate warmth and caring while criticizing Obama. That will be hard to do.”

Actually he has THREE big problems advice from Offal like this jerk, the fact that the “questions” were framed by liberals and the fact that the moderators are Obama supporters.

Romney has got to go AFTER Obama, ILLUSTRATE the differences between HIM and that creep and REMIND the American people of what this bastard DID do to them and what he TRIED to do to them (cap and trade) but wqas blocked.

If he follows the advice of this lying bastard from Georgetown and CONTINUES to play Mr. Nice-Guy, he loses and so do we.

Romney is going to have to debate the media questioners who will savage him, Obama will stand there looking Presidential.

The MSM will report Obama trounced Romney whether it was true or not.

The ‘undecided voter’ is a myth... At near October 1st. 2012 and the media tells me that there are people who do not know the different political stances and principles of obama vs Romney? What a joke... ‘Undecided’ translates as chronically indecisive personalities - who can’t decide after five years of thinking about it whether they want a dog or a cat... Undecided voters either have no moral compass pointing to basic principles, or they are just plain attention junkies. Undecided voters are those mentally challenged people who cannot decide where to go on vacation after debating about for six months... or those who cannot make a choice on a restaurant menu after 30 minutes of reading it. These whacko folks should be relegated to the back of the bus and REAL voters paid attention to ...

The myth of the undecided voter.
If after 3.5 years (Obama) you can not decide between President Obama and Governor Romney you are obviously not intelligent enough, not American enough, to deserve to vote.............

I’m going to guess that both will disappoint more than impress the majority of the general public, during their debates. Both seem to be fighting to lose.

I think it will be quite fun. Zer0 will be so frustrated, he won't be able to say anything without his teleprompter. Oh, did I mention the part about "don't EVER let them see you sweat." LOL
