I looked up the fuel price in Germany, “only” about $5.50 usd/gal with diesel even less.
At those prices, electric doesn’t make sense, especially with the widespread availability of very economical diesels, something the EPA has kept away from us in the US.

Yes...and No, my wife had a 2001 Beetle TDI that got about 52 mpg during the summer on non-blended fuel.

Where did you look that up? That’d have to be one rapid drop in fuel prices, from 1.70 per liter ($8.27/US gallon) back in August down to 1.13 per liter.
