DENVER — A man wounded in the shootings at a suburban Denver movie theater is appearing in a television ad aimed at getting voters' and candidates' attention before the first presidential debate — and to shed some light on gun violence.

Stephen Barton, 22, of Southbury, Conn., was among the 58 people injured in the July 20 attack in Aurora that also left 12 people dead. In a 30-second spot targeting cable television viewers in the Denver and Washington, D.C., markets, he urges people to ask themselves during Wednesday night's debate which candidate has a plan to stop gun violence.

Filmed inside an empty movie theater, Barton talks about his experience during the shooting as photos of jagged gunshot wounds to his face and neck are shown.

"I was lucky. In the next four years, 48,000 Americans won't be so lucky, because they'll be murdered with guns in the next president's term, enough to fill over 200 theaters," Barton says in the ad.

The ad is part of the "Demand A Plan" campaign led by shooting survivors and Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a bipartisan group of more than 725 mayors who advocate closing what they say are loopholes in laws designed to prevent felons, domestic violence offenders, the seriously mentally ill and other dangerous people from obtaining firearms.

"Especially now, given what's happened in the past few months with guns and these mass shootings, I don't think there is a better opportunity to talk about this," Barton said in an interview with The Associated Press

I see this guy found a way to both politicize and cash in on his victimhood.

Chicago pretends to have implemented Obama’s “plan to end gun violence”.

How’s THAT working out for you??!?!

The ad is part of the "Demand A Plan" campaign led by shooting survivors and Mayors Against Illegal Guns...

When these mayors publicly announce that they've all fired their bodyguards and will, themselves, not carry any firearms I'll consider allowing my Second Amendment rights to be infringed.Until then, they can go do something to themselves that's anatomically impossible.

Did ya hear that,Mr Doomberg....Mr Ballet Dancer?

He should be grateful the idiot decided to use a gun rather than blocking the exits and a gallon of gasoline.
I’m still waiting for someone to propose common sense criminal control.

There you go with the common sense again.

You know that's not allowed in the Land of the Loony Left.

Only guns kill in the Land of the Loony Left, and because there is no guns there is no war.

Hannibal was just a traveling circus.

I heard the commercial this morning and was wondering why he doesn’t ask to stop ALL violence instead of “gun violence”? These people will never stop.

It’s not working well, has never worked, and will continue to result in the deaths of many innocents.

Discouraging people from confronting evil BY DISARMING them is madness.

It might be madness, but it is very telegenic and makes a great headline.

It can also do wonders for a persons political career.

Protect the public? Yeah... They don't actually give a sh*t about that or they'd be encouraging everyone to learn how to carry a firearm and use it safely.

I guess he liked being a victim, and wants to make victimhood legally mandatory.

It has always been in the interest of the state to usurp power. Many sheeple allow this thanks in part to their carefully engineered indoctrination from all media sources and govt schooling. And it is human nature to relegate unpleasant chores (defense of self and the state) to others.

However, the text of the 2nd Amendment makes it clear why the people have the right to arms — for the security of a FREE state.

Free men possess arms, slaves don’t.

Yep, they found someone that would sell out the citizens
and their right to protect themselves.

What if he had been saved by a CC from a mugger—
would he be FOR personal protection then?

Idiot sell out!

The prefatory clause gives a reason for the operative clause. The full text of the Second gives one reason, but that reason isn't the only one. It also doesn't modify what follows, it just validates it.

The Socialists (Dems and gun-hating Repubs too) will try and tell you that the National Guard is the "militia" you can join to exercise your RKBA. They are worse than wrong. They are traitors to the fundamental freedoms the Founders tried to preserve.

Going to be some hard times ahead.

Gun Rights advocates need to start sponsoring commercials too. We are way too squeamish about the subject. The bottom line is that, while a nut gets his hands on a gun and shoots a bunch of people every once in a while, the vast majority of the time guns save lives and protect the weak against the physically stronger. The old lady who some thug tries to rob. The young woman that some animal tries to rape. We need those people in commercials.

Yep. He conveniently ignores that the theater in question didn't allow carrying weapons, even with a permit. The good guys were disarmed, and those who really don't care about the rules continue to not care what any of the rules are.

(Like not shooting people at random in a crowded theater...)

It may not be the only reason, but it must be recognized as the essential reason. We can function as a “ militia of one”, but it is far more effective to train with others so as to have someone to watch your 6, 3 and 9. A rifle team can more effectively counter SWAT, HRT, etc., that the tyrants might want to direct our way. (Not merely weapons, but tactics and techniques one can only acquire from knowledgable sources—if one is serious about the pledge, “no more Wacos and Ruby Ridges”).

“What, Sir, is the use of the militia? It is to prevent the establishment of a standing army, the bane of liberty. Whenever Governments mean to invade the rights and liberties of the people, they always attempt to destroy the militia, in order to raise an army upon their ruins.” Elbridge Gerry, Aug 17, 1789

Look around and count the standing armies. What trained militias exist to oppose them?

The hour is later than we think.
