I looked again at his right thigh, and I think I see an outline of something square that may have slipped out of position on his thigh, the bottom of the square is turned toward the inside of his left thigh, and he may be placing his hand between his thigh to either make the padding look less conspicuous because it is out of place, or he is trying to push it back so it is straight up and square in position.

That’s the best reason for the ‘hands between the legs’ thing he’s doing that I’ve seen so far! I don’t think it’s so much a ‘protection’ behavior as something is going on/wrong inside those pants legs!! :-)
