SPRINGFIELD — The Obama administration and Gov. Pat Quinn have mapped out an end-run around the GOP that will enable the state to unload the long-mothballed Thomson Correctional Center for $165 million, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin’s office confirmed Tuesday.

Sure was. It's Illinois' reward for being firmly in Obama's column. Wasn't that special!

Holy Crap! Yes it is!

Some Guantanamo detainees to be moved to Illinois

Some terrorism suspects held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be moved to an Illinois prison that the federal government will buy to hold them, the Obama administration announced Tuesday.

Fewer than 100 Guantanamo detainees would come to the maximum-security Thomas Correctional Center, 150 miles west of Chicago, said Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois. Republican Rep. Mark Kirk of Illinois put the figure at 70.

An executive order issued by President Obama called for Attorney General Eric Holder to purchase the nearly vacant prison and for Secretary of Defense Robert Gates to "prepare the [prison] for secure housing of detainees currently held at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base who have been or will be designated for relocation, and shall relocate such detainees to the [prison], consistent with laws related to Guantanamo detainees."

YES and Rush spoke about it today.

Congress turned down buying the joint. So Obama went around them.

This man is a crook, a liar, and he has committed many impeachable offenses. When he leave DC (hopefully very soon), can he pardon himself? I’m sure he will pardon all of his friends.

And still, Illinois will go for Obama. I hope they remember who was ‘in charge’, when those terrorists escape and continue their jihad - now right inside the US, instead of outside it.

Folks, in Illinois, are you happy about this?

A drop in the bucket in Illinois’ budget problems. $165e6 is a week’s worth of Chicago graft.

The entire 0bama administration should be the first occupants. Make them do the refurbishing as part of their sentences. Shovel-ready jobs.

Personally, I am not.

That said, there are actually people near the facility who want it, because that area is struggling, as all of Illinois is.

This time, Obama will carry Illinois the way Governor Quinn did, through the sheer numbers of the nutty Chicago voters.

Let me know when a SERIOUS secession pops up somewhere.

The prison is closest to a lihtly populated area in Wisconsin. By all means run ads there. Strategically, he should hit Iowa as well. That's another swing state.

What a waste. They could have turned it into a high school.

Is there a right to SS protection in the Constitution? Perhaps it should be based on economic need.

Uncle Chip, I was incarcerated in several federal prisons. The feds don’t turn prisons into schools. They actually turn schools into prisons. I spent time in Yankton (SD) Federal Prison Camp. It is on the Nat’l Registry of Historical Places. It was formerly Yankton College. I also was imprisoned in Rochester (MN) Federal Medical Center, formerly a state hospital.

The article mentions that 1,000 permanent positions would be created at this new federal prison. I highly doubt that. Based on my experience in the federal prison system, I would estimate 200 permanent employees - tops.

On a semi-related note, it was all of the Illinois and New York politicians, political grifters, and organized crime figures that showed me the ropes on my first day of federal prison in Sandstone, MN. It wasn’t until I was in prison that I realized, “Wow! There are a lot of Illinois politicians in prison!”

Yes, it did. Prison is where I got straight with Jesus, got turned onto Limbaugh and conservatism, and where I studied the Bible, law and the US Constitution, and lastly, human nature in its most base, tribal, primitive habitat.

I was a legal clerk, running the law library for a couple of years. I spent my days reading every published federal case. I viewed Desert Storm on CNN with Lyndon LaRouche and studied the Book of Job with Rev. Jim Bakker. I played a lot of bocce and smoked 50-cent cigars with Gambino Bros. I traveled the country in a blacked-out bus while shackled and handcuffed, never knowing what state I was even in until we arrived for the night. I flew Con-Air for one transfer. Try to eat a bologna sandwich and half an apple while you’re hands are black-boxed and cuffed to your waist. I actually stayed 30 days longer than I needed to (before a transfer to a halfway house) so I could finish another semester of college credit. I took 17 hours that last semester.

I did see a lot of violence and fear, but I actually now have to pause and reflect to remember those times. It is the good I remember the most. In the end, it was a good experience. I admitted at the time that I deserved to be there, but I did eventually hit the point of diminishing returns.

Two of my best friends from there are now in the ministry, one doing prison ministry. I know many ex-cons, and the ones I know that care enough to vote, vote Republican. Most will never care enough to participate.

Sorry for my rambling. I hope I made sense.
