Authorities are investigating an incident where an American citizen was grazed by a bullet while fleeing from gunmen in the outskirts of Reynosa.

Pharr police reported that it happened on the Mexican border city's eastside early Sunday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that a wounded 38-year-old man drove up from Mexico at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge around 8:20 a.m. Sunday.

The Pharr man told customs officers that a bullet grazed his head while fleeing from gunmen in his red Ford Ranger pickup truck.

It's not clear why the man was in Mexico or what he was doing but he told authorities he was on the outskirts of Reynosa when a vehicle full of men tried to get his attention.

The men wanted the driver to pull over but he refused prompting them to pull out weapons and open fire.

A bullet went through the rear window and grazed the Pharr man on his head.

The Pharr man made it to the international bridge where paramedics rushed him to the hospital.

Investigators reported that the Pharr man remains hospitalized as of Tuesday afternoon.

Pharr police, ICE agents and FBI agents documented the incident but the case belongs to Mexican authorities.

Tamaulipas State Police told Action 4 News that the investigation belonged to federal officials but those officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

The U.S. Consulate in Matamoros issued a travel warning back in April for travel on Tamaulipas highways that still remains in effect.

Monte Alto-based missionary Nancy Davis was killed in a similar incident back in January 2011 where men tried to pull over her husband's truck but they kept driving.

I'm glad mother has passed on. She would have been livid at that construction.

Headlines these days are written by idiots.
