A Chicago police helicopter discovered a patch of marijuana plants the size of two football fields, nestled among heavy brush along the Bishop Ford Freeway on the Southeast Side, authorities say.

The helicopter spotted the pot as it flew above overgrown wetlands near Stony Island and 105th Street around noon Tuesday.

Heh-heh. When I clicked on the article there was a Google ad next to it for a hydroponic grow kit.

It grows like crazy in Il. Most of it is volunteer from hemp grown for rope long ago. This could very well such a patch. It has little drug value.

A Pot Christmas Tree? I think I saw that in a Cheech & Chong movie once.

If the plants are as big as Christmas trees, you can bet this is not “ditch weed.”

I’ve been down that stretch of SI dozens of times. It is remote for being in an urban setting. They taped parts of Nightmare on Elm Street in that area.

I noticed fishermen coming and going all the time. I had wondered about how much illegal activity was going on there. Never considered weed since it was so soggy and tended to flood out in each good rain.

Before he got hurt that was going to be their secret weapon against Santonio Holmes.

good bet, as i cant see the risk/reward for an outdoor crop in N Ill...

ive got an ornamental/perennial thats a cousing of the dope plant, and when it goes to seed, it grows like a weed...

“Here it is October and they just now spotted this monster crop? Something’s wrong with that picture...”

That is common in the Midwest. They don't bother looking much until Sept-Oct.

The reason is that pot stays green long after the normal weeds/bushes are turning color. Thus the pot really stands out and is easy to spot from the air.

I see police choppers and planes flying over my property every fall.

Yea, pot tress mean poor product.
A field this size should have been spotted long ago, this picture seems odd.

I have sat on a John Deere 4020 and looked right at the tops
of it. I does get big around here! We used to joke about
running the baler thro it, then putting it in the car trunk
of someone we hated and informing the cops.

There are some good close shots in the vid. This stuff is not “ditch weed,” which I’m quite familiar with. We used to pick it in Wisconsin. This was the good stuff!

I was on my Droid the first couple of posts. Didn't see the
vid. WOW! you are right! In a former life, I would have been
salivating at the sight of those.

Agreed. Large areas in that part of the city are quite barren. It’s for damned sure one place you don’t want to get stuck in, especially after dark.

SI “ends” at the river North of the Ford plant. The last section next to Lake Calumet is fear-inducing even in daytime.

I showed up to work one day (worked at the terminal there) and the CFD was putting out a car fire. Quite spectacular.

Stolen car...cripsy hooker.

Cannabis has a unique infrared signature and if an aircraft with that capability flew over that acreage in July they would have spotted it. Sometimes, if not most of the time, authorities will have detected it earlier in the growing season but they'll wait until it's mature enough to have a much greater street value than it would've had they busted it right then and there or the next day. Sometimes they fudge the street value of the plants they find. For example, a novice grower will have a plant or two growing on the porch or in a window box and a neighbor or (ex)girlfriend rats them out. The cops show up loaded for bear but nobody knows whether the plants are male or female. It's the female cannabis plants that produce the THC content when the plant flowers and that's what a grower wants but the cops and neighbors don't really care. The neighbor may be ignorant but the cops aren't. They'll proceed with the bust as though they're taking down some kind of drug kingpin but then the plants turn out to be male or just immature to the point that the ACTUAL street value is next to nothing. Once they have court case, they'll exagerrate the estimated street value even though they know that the plant(s) couldn't yield enough TCH to get a fly high.
