TV anchor Jennifer Livingston blasts viewer who attacked her weight

A local news anchor took the air Tuesday to blast a viewer who attacked her for being overweight.

Jennifer Livingston of WKBT in La Crosse, Wis., slammed the viewer on-air after he wrote in to complain that Livingston wasn't "a suitable example for this community's young people, girls in particular" because of her size.

"I was surprised indeed to witness that your physical condition hasn't improved for many years," the viewer wrote in the email titled "Community Responsibility."

"I leave you this note hoping that you'll reconsider your responsibility as a local public personality to present and promote a healthy lifestyle."

The letter quickly went viral after her husband, fellow WKBT anchor Mike Thompson posted it to his Facebook page Friday, telling followers that it made him "sick to his stomach."

She's a morning anchor, probably mostly watched by women who will feel better about themselves in comparison to her.

This woman is NOT on the air to be a “role model”. It’s a job. “Role models” come in many different forms. Manager of a department store, a chef, a barber, a carpenter. Should they lose weight because it might have a negative impact on those that see them?

What’s next? Stop smoking? Dress better? Get a toupee?

I disagree. She did exactly the right thing and she did it with class.

That explains the popularity of unwatchable shows like The View.

So, Edward R Murrow, Ernie Pyle, and Walter Cronkite were never seen as role models? I disagree.

Under Obamacare, it will be everyone’s business. Obese people are generally less healthy, will cost taxpayers more money, and will use a disproportionate amount of the country’s limited healthcare resources.

Now, it’s none of my business. It may be one day.

I guess people don't get out much. Her appearance, is 'normal' for parts of the country.

She can look however she wants and her employer can determine if she is 'qualified' and does a 'good' job as they see fit.

This is another first world problem, where people have nothing else to bitch about or complain about except some person trying to make a living and pay the bills.

Men are visual, more so than women. It does not make myself or men who think like myself “shallow,” any more than women who obsess on how much money a man makes, for suitability for dating or marriage.

I see both sides at fault here. On the one hand, I don’t think Jennifer Livingston should have spent all that time responding on the air. She could have just as easily shot back an email to the guy saying the same thing. On the other hand, after seeing the guy’s comments to her, I get the impression that he is an arrogant jerk who probably makes a habit of looking down his nose at other people, and finds reasons to tear them down.

I agree with you. It’s the same reason I watch the news on Univision, and I don’t speak Spanish!

There are a couple of female anchors here who routinely get dumped on for being fat. Both of them have at least five kids.

Coincidence????? (especially when women like Camryn Manheim get a pass)

What a coincidence that this should come up during anti-bullying month & give them another PC platform to stand on.

The viewer wrote a personal note to her and SHE made it a media event.

She gets no credit from me.

Rather like when Congress was condemning political vitriol and Al Franken was sitting in the Senate at the time.
