WASHINGTON - A subdued Barack Obama squared off Wednesday against a sharp and eloquent Mitt Romney in their hotly anticipated first presidential debate, providing Americans with an unfiltered glimpse of both men just a month before the Nov. 6 election.

The incumbent president's often meandering answers, rife with halting pauses, as he took questions on domestic policy were in stark contrast to the energetic Romney, who often talked over debate moderator Jim Lehrer to aggressively tout his policies while criticizing Obama.

I just had to post this as it looks like it could have been compiled from comments made on FR on the live debate thread! It totally affirms the opinions of Freepers who posted their views about how the debate came off.

It’s kinda cool that Mitt just talked over Leahrer. I probably would have not shown such civil restraint.

Mitt had to fight for every minute he got. Lehrer let Obama ramble forever, which was fine because he just made himself look worse, but Obama would hold up his finger and say “let me make this 1 point”

Overall, I haven’t been this excited in a long time. Interesting to see what the mainstream press comes up with overnight. We’re all ready seeing that Romney was “aggressive”.

Only three things that were almost a gaffe for Romney. Him saying he’d repeal Medicare, then correcting himself to say Obamacare. He said Obama was not going to do anything differently on Social Security and Medicare, then corrected himself about Medicare. And Romney saying maybe he should get a better accountant to look into the tax breaks for shipping jobs overseas, could be construed as Romney being willing to do that if he could get a tax break for it.

I was astounded on the several occasions Lehrer proposed answers for Zero to parrot, and Zero dropped the ball. Hysterical.

Lehrer tried to feed Obama lines at one point about 1/3rd in when it became clear Obama was losing. And when they were supposed to be allowed to just respond to one another, Lehrer would instead tell them to “respond on this particular issue,” ones where he thought Obama would have an advantage or Romney a disadvantage.

Lehrer let Obama ramble forever

I think that was OK with Romney as he wisely saw a train wreck occurring.

Wow!

But never fear AP is telling everyone that Obama was ‘professorial’, and the mean Romney was ‘aggressive’.

AP also has a hit piece on Jim Lehrer’s moderation of the debate.

It’s great to watch Obama’s press in action...

Lehrer let Obama ramble forever

Rehlel (for our Asian audience) did surprisingly well, I thought.

Lehrer is hard left, but despite his best efforts Obama simply looked like he was about to forget his talking points. Romney wasn’t perfect, but these debates are incredibly high pressure and a like a fight between black belts you beat yourself in gaffes and errors.

I thought that Romney appeared poised, on target and Presidential. He managed both Lehrer and Obama. The camera work was totally in Romney’s favor and Obama “abandoned” the stage while Romney’s family filled it. Somebody in Camp Romney is doing their job right.
