Sesame Workshop: 'Big Bird lives on;' we receive 'very little funding from PBS'
CNN ^ | October 4, 2012

Before Mitt Romney said he was going to stop the subsidy to PBS, even though he likes Big Bird, at the first presidential debate, Sherrie Westin, executive vice president and chief marketing officer, Sesame Workshop, told CNN’s Soledad O’Brien that cuts to public broadcasting will not ‘kill Big Bird.’

Westin says, “Sesame Workshop receives very, very little funding from PBS. So, we are able to raise our funding through philanthropic, through our licensed product, which goes back into the educational programming, through corporate underwriting and sponsorship. So quite frankly, you can debate whether or not there should be funding of public broadcasting. But when they always try to tout out Big Bird, and say we’re going to kill Big Bird – that is actually misleading, because Sesame Street will be here.”

It’s like this for me. With $16 trillion in national debt and annual deficits well over $1 trillion— why does the federal government need to fund broadcasting in any form? Isn’t this a luxury???

That’s because they take in $50M a year in royalties.

Yes, exactly, but you won't be deadbeat freeloaders. You'll be earning the money.

...so Romney’s cut to PBS WON’T kill Big Bird?

So what is the big stink about?

What’s the problem here?

Exactly. Cuts to PBS will NOT kill Big Bird.

That’s the whole idea. We should not be going into more debt to give money to a tv show that really doesn’t need our help.

Big Bird lives on...
Which exactly makes Romney’s point,.
When the prospect of PBS going off the dole is raised, this is what they always say: “Hey, we don’t get THAT much from Uncle Sugar!”
Well, OK, I say back, “Well then, you probably won’t even miss it, being such a little drop in the bucket.”

Gov. defunding of PBS will only affect the so called news division.

Big Bird and all the other billionaires and millionaires that live on Sesame Street should not be receiving handouts from the government.

Those 1%ers hardly need the money what with all the royalties they receive.

No more handouts for filthy rich puppets.

Excuse me, Sherrie, but it's the other way around. We say we want to cut PBS and your side trots out that the cold, heartless and greedy Republicans want to kill Big Bird.

““Sesame Workshop receives very, very little funding from PBS. So, we are able to raise our funding through philanthropic, through our licensed product, which goes back into the educational programming, through corporate underwriting and sponsorship.”

Then why do you shake down taxpayers every year, Sherrie?

It’s just like all of Bathhouse Barry’s billionaire and millionaire buddies who say taxes are too low for them but who never voluntarily send in larger tax payments.

Why would liberals care? They already dumped on Jim Lehrer.
