My Father always drinks black coffee. I asked him about it one time, and he told me he started drinking coffee when he was 6. It was during the depression, and even if they didn't have any milk, my Grandmother always had Coffee for my Grandfather every morning. When my father got up, he would put saltines in black coffee and eat that for breakfast.

I didn’t grow up in the depression, but I ate saltines and coffee when I was about 6 yrs old too. I would spread a little butter on my crackers too. Good stuff. My mother grew up in the depression, so I must have got the idea from her.
