2-Second Rule:

Keep 2 seconds’ worth of road between you and the car ahead, and you’ll have enough distance to slow down/stop if something suddenly happens to the car in front of you - works at every speed

... BUT this is for dry roads; in bad weather, add more time (obviously).

Tailgaiting at high speed is for fools with a deathwish

No, the faster you go, the more time you need in between.
Three or Four seconds at 60 and 70. That is DRY conditions.

Look up the Smith System of Space Cushion Driving.
