Preparations underway for Romney's Port St. Lucie visit [2:45 p.m. start time Sunday]

[TODAY]

PORT ST. LUCIE, FL (WFLX) - Fresh off of a busy week of campaigning, Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney prepares to make a stop along the Treasure Coast for a rally in Port St. Lucie on Sunday.

The "Victory Rally with Mitt Romney, Port St. Lucie" event is put campaign crews into overdrive on Saturday as workers fought against the clock to prepare Tradition Square for crowds.

"I'm wondering if there's going to be enough room?" said Cindy Mulleady, a Tradition resident. "I think we're going to have a much bigger turnout."

The Romney campaign on Saturday said with many roads and lots closed, they are hoping attendees arrive early, well before the slotted 2:45 p.m. start time. A spokesperson said organizers are preparing for 5,000-to-10,000 people.

"We haven't had that kind of people here in a long time, we're looking forward to it," said Kate Labonte, owner of Kilwin's Chocolate and Ice Cream shop in Tradition Square.

Labonte expects to see a line out of the door at her shop. She said it would be a much needed change in pace especially since the announcement of the Digital Domain layoffs.

"That was a depressing day, it was a really sad day around here and definitely him coming is uplifting a lot of people because we have been so down," said Labonte.

Some questioned the impact of the rain that could fall on Sunday. A soggy forecast for an outdoor event could spell trouble and mud.

"If they see the weather is like this, they're probably going to bring rain gear, but I don't think it's going to keep them home. I don't know of anyone melting from the rain, not since the Wizard of Oz," said Bill Paterson, chairman of the Republican Party of St. Lucie County

Paterson said people flooded his phone and email inbox all day on Saturday. He expects that interest to translate into a packed rally no matter the weather.

Organizers said they expect to open gates starting at 12:45 p.m. on Sunday.

Attendees must RSVP and have a ticket to get inside.

October 6, 2012: “Mitt Romney thrills throngs of admirers in Apopka”

“.......The citizens at Apopka Amphitheater were also both ready and willing to endure some difficult conditions, and lucky they weren’t worse.

The Romney campaign said it took in RSVPs from 14,000 to 15,000 people to the event, though it did not know how many actually came. Apopka Chief Administrative Officer Richard Anderson said earlier the amphitheater had a capacity of about 10,000. The place was overflowing, and most of the last few thousand people, at least, who arrived had to fight through crawling traffic. Many people abandoned their cars along the roads’ grassy shoulders and walked a mile or more to get to the park.

But these people were happy to be there together, and having watched Romney’s debate performance last week, they were feeling like winners. They thundered a welcome when Romney and his wife, Ann, took stage, then cheered and roared repeatedly through his 23-minute speech.

They and Romney caught a major break when vicious evening thunderstorms rolled over menacingly but passed Apopka by, leaving just a few sprinkled drops.”.... - Story

“The trip comes on the heels of an unsteady debate performance by the president last Wednesday in Denver. Gallup’s daily tracking poll Saturday showed the president’s lead over Romney nationally slipping from six points midweek to just three points on Saturday.”

[FRIDAY]

“Romney gets group hug in St. Pete”

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — The defining moment of Mitt Romney’s first Florida appearance after his consensus triumph in the first presidential debate was, perhaps, not something he said in his upbeat 25-minute speech, but the reaction of the crowd of 5,500, plus about 2,000 standing outside the barriers at St. Petersburg’s Pier Park.

When Romney’s campaign bus pulled into Pier Park at 6:50 p.m. Friday and the candidate got out, the crowd didn’t just scream and cheer as is the norm for this kind of thing, but pressed in on him as he made his way to the outdoor podium, like a group hug.

That sense was echoed by some of the people who attended the rally.

“He grabbed my hand three times,” said an excited Audrey Rumsey of Spring Hill, who came with her parents, Walt and Mary Southard.”
