Suddenly, Casey in a battle against Smith

By Colby Itkowitz, Call Washington Bureau

October 8, 2012

WASHINGTON — Suddenly, Pennsylvania's sleepy U.S. Senate race is getting buzz.

And like the snooze button on an alarm clock, the buzz reveals just how long incumbent Bob Casey's campaign team has overslept, allowing unknown Republican Tom Smith to draw closer.

Until the past few days, Smith has controlled the narrative: He's the farm-boy-turned-coal-miner with a large family who mocks Casey (nicknamed Senator Zero in Smith ads) as an ineffective lawmaker.

Smith's a businessman who until last week was airing two and a half times more commercials statewide, and was running them unchallenged in the Philadelphia media market. Smith could spend upwards of $15 million of his own fortune in the general election. Casey didn't begin buying time on the Philly-area airwaves until the last Friday in September.

Smith was on Mark Levin about 10 days ago. He sounds like a great candidate, a businessman trying to become a citizen legislator.

It'd be great to see Smith knock off Casey.

Question: If Ryan stomps Biden in the upcoming debate like some are saying and Romney wins the next two debates with Obama, even if not like the first one, could this help Smith In PA?

Unless there’s a lot of ticket splitters, this puts PA in play in a big way.

Yes. Romney will be the first GOP candidate since Bush 41 to carry Pa. He will win it going away. He may have big enough coattails to sweep Smith over the victory line. I sent Smith $10 tonight. The time to put a stake in Obama and Casey’s heart is now. The Dems are smugly assuming Casey is a shoo-in. How sweet it will be when Smith pulls into the lead for good early on Wednesday morning. Look for crestfallen Jackasses all over Pa and America.

More likely is that R-R will ride Smith’s coatails, not the other way ‘round.

Not surprising. Latest poll in PA has Romney trailing Obama by only TWO points - well inside MoE.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

Another reason why third partyism is an electoral dud. No coattails.

I certainly hope PA is in play for Smith and Romney and don't care much whose coattails who rides just so we come out on top:)

I think it could definitely help, Romney-Ryan are polling higher statewide than Smith is. Smith’s problem is about 20% of the electorate don’t know who he is.

I think a real boost would be for Romney-Ryan to campaign in PA and talk about Smith and introduce him at their events.

A rising tide lifts all boats.

In this case it can also be said that Tom Smith has been gunning the twin Mercs. :)

This is great news about Keith Rothfus, Smooth.

It's really hard to believe the Repubs haven't dumped that turkey Gleason as yet and I imagine he and the Murtha machine are deeply saddened. LOL!

I figured that Romney/Ryan could be a help to Smith if they are doing well, here's hoping they cream Obama/Biden and help out Smith with name recognition, maybe he'll do the same for them in some areas.

Casey is a buffoon - his last name in Pennsylvania is like having the Kennedy name in Massachusetts. Ability and qualifications has nothing to do with him being a U.S. Senator, it is strictly name recognition.

It’s great, Casey, hasn’t got anything to attack Smith on. It’s a bitch trying to attack a private citzens record...lmao

Casey refused to debate Santorum last time.

He won on his name - Casey was a respected Governor here.

But Casey's the dumbest Senator in Congress, even dumber than Patty Murray.

Will Casey debate Tom Smith? We'll see.

Smith IS the real thing. Ol’ Bushy Brows is just like his Dad, empty without the Unions. And worse, he isn’t even pro-life like Bushy Brows Sr.
