Sesame Street received $1 mil stimulus bill grant – created “1.47″ jobs
Washington Examiner ^ | 10/8/2012 | Sean Higgins

This grant was brought to you by the letters “A” and “R” — as in American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, aka the “stimulus bill.”

Sesame Workshop, the independent nonprofit corporation that produces the popular childrens’ program Sesame Street, received a $1,067,532 stimulus bill grant in August 2010, via the Department of Health and Human Services.

The funding was to promote healthy eating according to the federal Recovery.gov website:

SW [i.e., Sesame Workshop] will carry out an expansion of its highly successful Healthy Habits for Life initiative, which promotes improved nutrition and increased physical activity, targeting low-income preschool-aged children and their families and care providers.

The projected created “1.47″ new jobs, the website reported. How they could calculate this to a hundredth of a percent is anybody’s guess. In any event, that comes out to about $726,000 per job created.

The money is separate from the funds Sesame Workshop receives from the federally-funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting to run the Sesame Street program on PBS stations.

The Recovery Act website lists the healthy eating project as more than 50 percent completed though most of the grant money appears to have been drawn.

Sesame Street has been in the news lately ever since Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said  last week that he would like to cut the funding PBS even though he likes Big Bird, a popular character on the show. The statement prompted a public comment from PBS criticizing Romney.

My guess for the .47 is part timers or a small sub contract.

I’m pretty sure Foghorn Leghorn, THE REAL BIG BIRD, didn’t get anything. I think he’s a Republican. LOL!

So you’re telling me Bugs, Foghorn, and Co. can exist and do well for themselves in a free enterprise system and markets WITHOUT government handouts??? That is just plain Looney!

I've rarely seen anything friendly to conservative causes on PBS. They've always had a liberal socialist bias. Cut the funding.

Hilarious!!! Thank you for posting that. Now why can't CNN, MSNBC, etc. report the debate results like that? Didn't realize the Chinese were so far ahead of us in reporting, and especially in the reporting of our news.

The funding was to promote healthy eating

This is hysterical. It seems a bit ridiculous for a grossly overweight bird, a round-faced, chubby Ernie, and a fat, fuzzy blue "monster" who consumes only cookies to be telling children about healthy eating. When they push this new diet initiative...are those characters going to suddenly become slim? Then will they go after Miss Piggy, too? Will we see sleek and slim replacements showing off their toned arms?

As children, most of us learned nutrition in grade school, and again in health class in high school. However, we didn't need (or even understand) the principles much before the age of ten, if even by then. Silly puppets telling pre-schoolers with short attention spans about healthy eating is expecting them to have more respect for some make-believe characters than for what their parents are doing in their own homes. It is really just another ploy to try to alienate children from their parents and make them think their parents are bad.

However, if parents were the ones taking the initiative to provide well balanced, lower calorie meals there would be no problem. But all the money spent on Sesame Street touting the value of veggies, and lessons in school will not make one bit of difference. Only the parents can control what is being served on the table and provided in the home for their children.

And unless Big Bird, Ernie, and the Cookie Monster are going to go into the kitchens of America and prepare meals there is no way they are going to change what Mom or Dad plan to serve to their family.

With all of the Sesame Street merchandise being sold, why does the Sesame Workshop need grants?
