Universities love foreign kids because either they or their governments pay full-rippin’ retail.

Also Chinese kids apply because they’d rather be anywhere else.

As far as I’m concerned every singe Chinese diplomat, student and businessman in this country is a spy..military or economic,Yes,some of them may be *unwilling* spies (”if you want your family in China to be safe you’ll cooperate”) but they’re ALL spies nonetheless.

I tend to agree with your suspicions. They are always the sleeping dragon.

Exactly right. And it’s not just undergraduates, I’m told Vanderbilt Law School here in Nashville would not be able to break even if not for the international contingent’s paying full freight, because of their insane pricing strategy.

Sending THEM, HERE is much easier than trying to get around the export control laws in America.

“With our largest student population ever, the most academically talented entering class in our history, and a 10-year rise in the rankings, Drexel just keeps soaring higher.”

I would rather have Chinese spies than the crazy jihadis from the Middle east. I will take 10 chinese students for every one crazy nutbar from the middle east having their tuition paid by some oil sheik...

The universities are just trying to keep the bubble going. This is the end stage, bringing in foreign dupes. A major problem though is it's us taxpayers that are guaranteeing their student loans, not the foreign governments. These students are major flight risks when things go south.

Drexel could be recruiting foreign students because they are having trouble luring US students into Philadelphia because of all the muggings on campus.

Back in the late 1980s, when I was at SUNY @ Stony Brook, you could spend an entire day in the engineering buildings without hearing English spoken once. Lots of foreign students, especially Chinese and Korean (my roommate was from Seoul). And since it was a research university, they recruited a lot of phds from foreign countries who taught undergraduates. My honors calculus class was taught by a visiting professor from Romania. She spoke fluent English, but had a very strong accent that had some students struggling. However, having lots of relatives from Eastern Europe, I didn't have any problems understanding her.

On the other hand, there was a digital logic course taught by a visiting professor from China, and he was impossible to understand, occasionally lapsing into Chinese during his lectures. The Chinese students in the class would ask their questions of him in Chinese, and he'd answer them in Chinese too. A bunch of us protested, but the university refused to do anything, so nearly every English speaking student wound up dropping the course.

In my Alumni magazines, I see stories of people who attained status and success in their foreign homelands, after studying at my schools at various times over the past century.

My personal experience of the influx to my schools of Asians (from all regions) goes back 50 years.

I have no evidence that American schools were aggressively recruiting them back then, although I certainly heard grumbling from classmates assuming that was the case. This may have been because of the Asian grad students trying to teach courses without being able to speak intelligible English.

The cultural norm amongst young people in China today is “If you have half a brain, why are you still here?”

Most of them yearn to study abroad, and then by hook or by crook find some means of remaining wherever they went as permanent residents.

The junior colleges love them so much that foreigners get first crack at high-demand technical prerequisite classes, leaving American kids getting the worst teachers or not getting the classes at all.

Chinese students are certainly nothing new. In the late 80s my electrical engineering classes had a large group of Chinese students (the mechanical engineering classes were full of Indians instead). They spoke little English, all sat together in classes, apparently did nothing but study because they all got straight As. I remember one time we were working on a particularly hard area and one of the guys said “This is really hard! Even the Chinese kids are confused!”

They cheat too, a lot. They aren't even shy about it.
