Exclusive: Albert Thompson sees Turkey PM becoming most powerful man in region

The Turkish AK Party is on the verge of altering the balance of power in the Middle East. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan could soon be recognized as the most powerful man in the region.

Erdogan is campaigning to merge the offices of Turkey’s president and prime minister. Currently, the Turkish presidency is a ceremonial role with some judicial appointments, but the president also has the power to call for referenda, appoint the chief of the Turkish military and to mobilize the Turkish military. However, the chief of the general staff is the effective commander in chief, with the president only having a figurehead role. That could change.

The prime minister is the head of government, leader of Parliament and the driver of the legislative agenda. He also coordinates the foreign policy of the government but is limited by the powers of Parliament and the need to seek approval in advance for many initiatives. Erdogan has been open about his admiration of French and U.S.-style executive power.

The similarity between Erdogan and another regional strongman have not gone unnoticed. Islamism expert and Turkey observer Joel Richardson has noted the danger.

“No doubt, Turkey has found its Putin. One notable difference, however, is that Erdogan is loved both within and outside of his home country. While some have said that in Putin, a new czar has emerged, it’s actually much more accurate to say that in Erdogan, a new caliph has emerged. Even Khaled Meshaal, the exiled political leader of Hamas, recently stated, ‘Erdogan, you are not only a leader in Turkey now, you are a leader in the Muslim world as well.’”

Mr. Erdogan has pursued his goals relentlessly. When the AK Party did not win the two-thirds

Ottoman II. The Ottoman Empire cleansed Constantinople of Greek Christians by Genocide. The Armenian Genocide was just about 40 yrs prior...the Copts had better start packing. Christians in Iran and Syria fared somewhat better...It looks like the Obamist/Hillary plan is working in paving the way for a Caliphate. If this happens then there’s Cyprus, the north is already illegally occupied by Turkey, then Greece itself. They only deterrent in all of this happening is Israel. We don’t have Israel then Europe is going down. The Clintons/UN/NATO/NGO’s/ICG-ICC/Soros, Jeffrey Sachs, Clarke...and so many others helped pave the way for an Islamic state in the Balkans, with help from the media, by saying the Serbs were cleansing the Muslims, crying Genocide...as if...

And are they really that naive as to believe that without Israel everything would become peaceful, and other countries in the ME would approve a Palestinian state? It won’t happen, Jordan and Egytp would claim it. I think it was Morsi who stated they wanted Jerusaleum as their capital city already.

The 3-4 billion we give Israel is small change for what they’re doing in the ME for all of us.

Wonder if Turkey is just clearing out enough of an area so that the Kurds can claim a homeland and be a buffer against Iran.

The Ottoman’s used the Kurds in the Armenian Genocide. They promised the Kurds, that in return for killing, pillaging, raping, and herding out the Armenians, they’d get a homeland. The Kurds led the horrific genocide, and got nothing in return. The Kurds today, to their credit, have acknowledged their part in the genocide, the Turks continue to deny it. The Kurds are smart people, the Turks continue to discriminate against them, history is engraved in their memory, so don’t know that they’ll take the bait again.

You make an excellent point.

I’m thinking the AKP will use the Salafists who’ve been used successfully all over the Arab Spring countries, not only to usher it in, but keeping it controlled in the aftermath. The Islamic Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) is the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood. And the Islamic powerful, Salafist Calling, is the political wing of the Al Nour Party. Al Nour partnered with the FJP party in government but in recent days the Al Nour mullahs are infighting with each other. These countries are in a better position today (thanks to obama/hillary team), than they’ve ever been for their Global Caliphate. They won’t let Israel stand in their way. If Obama gets another 4 yrs we’re all toast.
