Actually, when he was campaigning in Oregon in 2008 he told the crowd he had been to 57 states and had one more to go.
So you owe him an apology, Max. He knew there are only 58 states (since Canada, the 59th state, had already been spun off).

He says he has been to 57, one to go and two his staff wouldn't let him go to.
Total = 60 states. He increased the number of states by 20%.
