A Modest Proposal For Our Big Bird-Brained President
Investor's Business Daily ^ | 10/09/2012 | IBD Staff

Subsidies: With the economy faltering and Middle East unrest rising, President Obama acts as though the biggest issue facing the country is Mitt Romney's alleged threat to "Sesame Street." We have an idea for him.

According to a recent tally, Obama brought up either Big Bird or Elmo 13 times in speeches since last week's debate, in which Romney promised to end federal support for PBS and NPR.

That compares with zero mentions of how he plans to revive the economy, and no references to Libya. And he's now running an ad featuring Big Bird.

If Obama is going to treat the Americans like children, why doesn't he just go all the way and announce that, if re-elected, he'll name Muppets to Cabinet posts in a second term? They couldn't be any worse than those he has in those positions now.

Yeah it's a really stupid topic but you have to admit that Romney left himself open to it by bringing it up to begin with. Faced with a trillion dollar deficit all he can specifically mention cutting is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which would reduce the deficit by 4/100ths of 1 percent. It was a ridiculous suggestion on his part, and left him wide open for being mocked.

Besides, if you were Obama what would you rather talk about? Cookie Monster or the faltering economy?

We can say our ambassador is dead and Big Bird is alive.
OK that is tasteless I apologize to the family of our ambassador. .
ZERO is on the ropes and it's fun to watch.
I fell real good about the election now. . . .

I don't mean to pick on you specifically, but even if "we had the money" it still shouldn't be spent on PBS and NPR. I cringe every time I hear someone say "we can't afford blah, blah, blah". Just because the government takes in tax revenues, doesn't mean it should spend the money on something.

I disagree. If Mitt went into in length discussion on the subject for a week as the obamanites are doing, then yes.

I personally liked hearing it for I think it’s wrong for the fed gov to fund leftist crap. I worked with and for some of the most diehard leftists for a few years, and they listened to NPR all the time. I just think it’s all out wrong for the taxes I pay to be used to spew propaganda.

I do see eliminating funding of the EPA a higher priority, but can you imagine the fit the libs would throw over that?

...it still shouldn't be spent on PBS and NPR. ...

OK, I have to disagree with you on that. Having worked in commercial radio in my youth, I know the Program Department always has to have its eye on ratings and audience numbers, which means that programming that doesn't pander to the greater public just doesn't happen. There was a reason that all the "God" programs ran on Saturday at 4 am local time -- the Arbitron numbers showed that the audience was as close to zero as you could expect. (Other markets may have had troughs at different times.)

In many markets, true classical music was available only on public radio stations, usually stations affiliated with universities and colleges. One friend located in rural Nevada listened to the local "National Poor-People's Radio" station because it was the only station within range that ran classical programming.

Notice that a lot of smooth jazz radio stations are gone? The market dried up.

Now, there are NPR network programs and NPR stations that don't follow the charter -- requiring any controversial topic be handled fairly -- originally put forth when Lyndon Johnson signed the legislation -- which is why we hear about "left-leaning" coverage from NPR "news" here on Free Republic.

(disclaimer of personal bias: I used to regularly listen to A Prairie Home Companion regularly -- and that was the only public-radio show I listened to.)

I don't think people really understood who Romney was calling Big Bird.

Obama's jumped on it because it was an easy target - won't reign in Wall Street but is death on Sesame Street and all the rest. I agree it's run its course but it did make Romney squirm a little, and it took a little bit of attention away from Obama's horrible performance in the debate.

I personally liked hearing it for I think it’s wrong for the fed gov to fund leftist crap.

Probably, but the deficit is a serious problem that deserved a serious answer. Holding up PBS as a way to solve the budget problem wasn't it.

I do see eliminating funding of the EPA a higher priority, but can you imagine the fit the libs would throw over that?

And they didn't throw one over killing off PBS?

Here’s a PAC ad idea:

Barack Obama has engineered an economy with 23 ++ million unemployed or underemployed persons.

He is campaigning for Big Bird & Elmo to hold their jobs!!!

Incredible!

Who doesn’t connect with the American citizen???

“Faced with a trillion dollar deficit all he can specifically mention cutting is the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which would reduce the deficit by 4/100ths of 1 percent.”

The problem is the tens of thousands of like expenditures that the govt makes. All trivial but when you add them up they are real. We are 16 trillion dollars in debt. Instead of following the shiny object and excuseing all expenditures because they alone “ won’t balance the budget” we need to demand that they account for every penny. It is time for the government to start setting priorities and no waste, no matter how small is acceptable. No more Big Bird, no more Cowboy poetry no more rediculous spending of any kind.
