Prez Can't hide debt behind Big bird
Boston Herald ^ | October 10, 2012 | Michael Graham

The International Monetary Fund reports that a second recession is looming for the global economy.

The House Government Oversight Committee finds that the U.S. ambassador killed by al-Qaeda on Sept. 11 was repeatedly denied his requests for additional security.

The workforce participation rate — the percent of able-bodied Americans in the workforce —is at a new low, while the number of folks on food stamps is at an all-time high.

And the sitting president of the United States is running campaign ads about . . . Big Bird.

Well, he was running the ads, until the Sesame Workshop announced that, like the AARP, they want nothing to do with Obama’s collapsing campaign, either. They’ve asked the president to pull the spots.

What must the world think? Iran moves ever closer to “map-wiping” nukes, North Korea announces its missiles can reach America, China is aggressively challenging its neighbors — and Barack Obama is pledging to save Elmo from the “dreaded private sector.”

As a Republican, I’m delighted. But as an American? I’m humiliated.

Back in the tech-boom years of the 1990s, we could afford a president who chattered on about school uniforms and the like. But we live in very serious times and a “Muppet-Of-A-Man” presidency isn’t enough.

The Obama approach of “leading from behind” was bad enough. Now it’s devolved into leading from behind Oscar the Grouch’s trash can and hiding under Bert and Ernie’s bed.

When Obama’s “Mitt Hates Big Bird” ad hit, the GOP responded with a graphic showing the numbers of times at recent campaign events Obama mentioned Big Bird (8) and Elmo (5) versus the number of times he mentioned Libya:

Zero.

On fiscal matters, the president is even worse, attacking Romney for daring to suggest we get government TV off the taxpayer dole. Does Obama realize that...

Why did you change the title of the article? Just wondering. The link goes to an article titled “Prez can’t hide debt behind Big Bird.”

You have NO reason to feel humiliated when what you SHOULD feel is deep, deep concern. Look at today’s world a little more closely and understand....
The ONLY thing that stands between the entire world and a new DARK AGES is a strong, resolute, moral United States of America. Under present “leadership” none of those factors are to be found.
For years the world existed under the strong protection of the USA, with would-be trouble makers generally cowed by the mere existence of the US.
There is an old saying, “Respect us, if you don’t respect us you damn well better FEAR us.” Present “leadership” has removed that from general thinking today. Be of either good cheer or deep dread for in about a month you’ll know the future of the world.

Actually, A Very good article coming from a liberal slanted newspaper and website.

What must the world think? Iran moves ever closer to “map-wiping” nukes, North Korea announces its missiles can reach America, China is aggressively challenging its neighbors — and Barack Obama is pledging to save Elmo from the “dreaded private sector.”

Any good Photoshoppers out there? I have no way of drawing this, but I thought of a great political cartoon with Big Bird's hand shoved up Obama's backside like a muppet making him say his craziness about needing to spend millions on PBS.

If Big Government does not get its fiscal house in order, we stand to lose much more than Big Bird.

I can imagine a comic depicting Obama hiding behind big bird, telling him to “Hit them! Hurt them! Beat them up!”, as big bird looks at him with a rather disgusted look on his face.

Big Bird is Big TV.

Were it not for PBS, Big Bird would have his own cable channel

I think you're confusing The Boston Herald where this appeared with The Boston Globe. The Herald is to The Globe as The Washington Times is to The Washington Post, except that unlike The Post I see no evidence of The Globe keeping even a token conservative among its op ed page writers.

When the latest disaster first made the TV, and it became obvious that our Embassy was not getting support from Washington, it was mentioned that they had requested an airplane, a big airplane to be made available to them. My impression was that they were thinking of getting out of Dodge while they could. It was never mentioned again, so what happened to the request for the airplane?
