Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez won his third consecutive six-year term after Sunday's vote, beating out rival Henrique Capriles by more than 9 percentage points and extending his rule to 20 years as leader of the oil-rich South American country.

"Today is a memorable day. I thank God and ask Him life and health to keep serving the Venezuelan people," Chavez, 58, said after his big victory, holding up a replica sword of 19th century independence hero Simon Bolivar in celebration. "I congratulate from my heart the more than 8 million Venezuelans who voted for Chavez. More than 8 million compatriots who voted for the revolution, who voted for socialism."

"Thank you, my God. Thanks to everyone. Thanks, my beloved people!!! Viva Venezuela!!!! Viva Bolivar!!!!!" he added on his official Twitter account. Voter turnout was reported at 81 percent, higher than the 75 percent recorded in the last presidential election in 2006.

Chavez's victory was not as comfortable as his 2006 campaign, when his margin of victory was as high as 27 percent, but the newly re-elected leader appeared as confident as ever, promising to keep Venezuela on the path of socialism. He recognized, however, that many in the country who voted against him remain concerned about the future.

"I extend from here my recognition of all who voted against us, recognition of their democratic weight," Chavez noted.

And as the cancer ravages his body, I suspect he will be pleading with God to spare him. Good luck with that, Hugo. We all die, but let it be sooner rather than later for the sake of Venezuela.

I’m just wondering how the main stream media are doing in Venezuela? I wonder how much money they make for their devotion to socialism? How are the networks competing? Job security? I ask this because 4 more years of obama we will have a socialistic country at best and a marxist country at worst and I wonder how many msm people will be in the bread lines with us if that happens.

No mention that he stole the election? No mention of the tanks sent out in case public outrage erupted?

The Venezuelan media, even more than ours, (hard as that is to believe) moves over for CHavez, and likely minimizes the
exposure of anyone who would expose him. Since it’s clear, and has been borne out a number of times now, that he can hang on to the Presidency AT WILL, they are very unlikely to cross him or bring in opposing voices, because they don’t want to be cut out of the only loop there is. I think Chavez is on his way to totally monopolizing “state media” (though he would never call it that) much in the same way Castro did in his first 20 or 30 years, in order to establish the idea that THAT is what media is for, and to get people used to that idea.

I guess Venezuela has “enjoyed” socialism longer that we have so it is understandable for the media to move over. I guess we can expect more of the same if O wins in November - along with a lot of other “stuff” the masses will enjoy.
