ASHEVILLE A wide-ranging roster of Republican heavyweights lent Mitt Romney a hand during his rally at the U.S. Cellular Center Thursday, underscoring the important role North Carolina will play in next month's presidential election.
House Speaker John Boehner and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee revved up the crowd prior to Romney's speech, but lieutenant governor candidate Dan Forest, N.C. Sen. Tom Apodaca and 11th District congressional candidate Mark Meadows were also given time slots to speak before the capacity crowd.
Coming off his successful debate last week with President Obama, a tanned and smiling Romney appeared confident and energized.
Polls showed him pulling ahead of Obama in Florida and Colorado, but a Rasmussen Report poll released on the eve of Romney's Asheville appearance shows the race in North Carolina remains a toss-up, despite his post-debate momentum nationally.
"Based on what I'm seeing here tonight, I'm going to go out on a limb and say we're going to win North Carolina," Romney said, evoking cheers from 7,600 supporters who packed the Asheville arena.

Getting almost 8,000 people together in Asheville, which is really Berkeley East, is quite a feat. That’s 10 percent of the population.

Asheville....or A$$ville as we call it is the San Fransisco of the south. Shame really...beautiful city and swarming with libs.....getting that many folks together there that does anyone involve sodomy is a victory in itself. Stay strong NC.....
I don't hear an overwhelming amount of conservatives cheering the Crybaby and the Nanny.
I saw Sarah Palin in the same venue in 2008 and the place was packed. There are a lot of conservatives in Asheville and surrounding areas but the whacko lefties get all the press.
