RivCo Officials Send Warning To Culprits Shooting At ‘Explosive Targets’

RIVERSIDE (CBSLA.com) — Riverside County officials joined Thursday to send a serious message to culprits who use “exploding targets” for shooting practice –stop now or be prosecuted.

Officials said people have been shooting at compounds that create a dangerous, and even deadly, blast in remote areas of the county.

The detonations have started wildfires, including a 364-acre blaze in Banning two weeks ago.

Chief John Hawkins from CAL FIRE said the suspects will be jailed.

“This is a no tolerance thing in Riverside County,” he said.

KCAL9’s Greg Mills said it’s easy to get elements to create the explosives at gun shows and the Internet even though it’s illegal to use the substances for target practice without permits.

“The way we look at it…it’s a very dangerous situation and we will prosecute people that use this product,” said John Hall from the Riverside County DA’s Office.

Authorities are also concerned about people who transport mixed elements to and from the shooting range.

If they get into an accident, the car has the potential to explode

It won’t explode until you mix it. Hell, gas coming out your ass will burn if you light it. Using that logic, it should be illegal to fart in the car.

Google Zomboom. Safe until you mix it. Blows up real good but catches fire like hell. For visual effects or dangerous entertainment.

Indeed. The compound is called Tannerite and the two parts must first be combined and then will only detonate when hit by something moving more that 1500 FPS. Even low velocity rifles and handgun rounds won't detonate it so I doubt anything inside a car during an accident would do the trick.

I used some for the first time about two weeks ago. A whole lot of fun. My understanding is it won’t burn and actually puts out fires, and it won’t explode unless hit by a bullet going over 2,500 fps. Explodes clean without flame so a little common sense will avoid any fire danger. I used it at an old abandoned rock quarry (with property owner’s permission) in way rural Tennessee where gunfire and explosions are not out of the ordinary and people tend to mind their own business.

That’s what they’re worried about- the quote refers to people transporting AFTER mixing, which would qualify them for a Darwin Award.

A Minnesotan man was fined $2,583 and sentenced to three years’ probation[5] on charges of detonating an explosive device and unlawful possession of components for explosives after he detonated 100 lb (45 kg) of Tannerite inside the bed of a dump truck by shooting it with a .50 caliber rifle from 300 yards (270 m) away on January 14, 2008 in Red Wing, Minnesota. The man was on probation when he mixed and shot the Tannerite and was not allowed to possess firearms or explosives. [6][7] The blast could be felt at Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant (roughly 5 miles away).[8]

"... My understanding is it won’t burn and actually puts out fires"

Yes and no, really. Tannerite by itself won't start a fire when detonated, but the extreme overpressure can cause oily brush like Sage or Rabbit Brush to smolder and ignite if the temperatures outside are mid-summer heat ranges -- and you'd have to place the container right in the bush. That Aluminum powder ingredient goes to molten temperature for a brief instant. I've seen this firsthand with Tannerite, but I've also seen sparks from a normal FMJ bullet striking a rock or metal plate start a fire that we had to run up and extinguish.

Best idea is never to shoot into brush clusters in high summer if you're shooting in a living desert with lots of scrub around. Make sure you're aiming and impacting into a nice cleared beaten zone with a good backstop of loose dirt and you won't have any problems. I shoot in the desert and always have some good fire extinguishers handy just in case, even though where I shoot looks like the planet Mars.

Tannerite's components are Ammonium Nitrate and powdered Aluminum. The video states dramatically that 'Exploding targets are readily available at gun shows and on the Internet'. Yes, that's true. And your local Home Depot sells 100 pound bags of granulated Ammonium Nitrate in the Garden department. As for the powdered Aluminum you need, all you need to do is add a tablespoon to a pound of Ammonium Nitrate to make it detonate with a sufficiently high speed bullet. An empty Pepsi can and a sandpaper disk on your orbital sander are all the tools you need.

Maybe it's a good thing that American schoolkids are among the world's lamest in basic Chemistry proficiency. The idle and ones might get dangerous ideas by examining those common household chemicals stored under the kitchen sink cabinet.
