ver the past half-century, the tools of neuroscience have revealed much about the workings of the human brain. Now researchers are pushing forward in a new frontier: exploring what goes on in the mind of mans best friend. The study of canine cognition has taken off in recent years, energized by new findings about how dogs learn words, numbers and abstract concepts and how they manage us, their ostensible masters.
In a study published in the journal Animal Cognition, researchers used a procedure known as preferential viewing to show that dogs can understand simple calculations. Eleven pet dogs were shown treats that were then placed behind a screen. When one treat, and then another, was placed behind the screen and the screen was removed, dogs gazed briefly at the two treats. When two treats were deposited behind the screen but only one remained when the screen was taken away, the dogs stared at the lone treat for longer, indicating that they were aware the math didnt add up.

That’s my Lovey! Goat Dog!
My four dogs were out in the back yard. The little one was looking at a tree. I asked him what he was thinking about.
“Oh....the wonder of photosynthesis.....how the seasons of the year affect the tree......how the leaves have been used to represent the life we have......the coming together of the nutrients in the soil and the water and sun and carbon dioxide......how marvelous this tree is.”
Duke was also looking at the tree. I asked him what he was thinking about.
“Oh.....if I can pee real high on that tree without tipping over.”
Your picture?
I stole it.
I can read my dogs minds ...... and they can read mine.
I can read my dogs minds ...... and they can read mine.
Sometimes ya just gotta look at them to know exactly what they are thinking...:)
Wait a minute, isn’t TIME MSM which means it is all lies?
I was hoping someone would post this. No matter how many times I read it I laugh!
I can’t speak for anyone else, but when my Tojo looks at me certain ways I know exactly what is on his mind and what he wants to tell me.
This is gonna sound silly, but I swear we have almost a spiritual bond between us.
(He’s a music critic, too. He howls when I do certain things to a piece he doesn’t like from his favorite spot under my SD-10 when I practice.....and dammit. he’s right, too. I change a certain inflection, or alter some dynamics of a phrase and he settles down....it does sound better his way. he’s priceless in that regard.....Who knew it? A dog who understands Chopin, Mozart, Beethoven, Liszt, and Rachmaninoff.)
My husband and I are both pilots and love that Far Side cartoon. As a newborn ICU nurse, I also love “Let’s get this baby off the ground” cartoon. (Not good with posting pictures.)
I refer to my German Shepherd as our toddler. My daughter calls him our autistic child. I conversationally, and not seriously, gave him about 6 commands in a row because he was being a pain. I just about hit the floor when he did all of them. “Go find your ball, bring it to me, put it here, then go lie down...” or something similar. It’s downright scary. He is always surprising me on how large his vocabulary understanding is. As for misbehaving...in the last 8 months he jumped into the pool once without permission this summer and went into the bathroom once. Sometimes I think an alien has taken over his body. LOL.

A lot of people think being an animal whisperer is cool. The majority of the time it’s a pain. Nothing like having your cat badger you for hours to open a can of tuna, or your dog barking in your head, but not actually physically barking, to get you up on a day you want to sleep in. And cats think they’re huge. One of mine crawled on my back when I laid down to take a nap and I knew she’d just died. Her foot print was huge. Humans are spiritual creatures. Most of us just lose that knowledge as we grow up in the world and lose our sensitivity.
I love the mountain goat in the clouds cartoon, and I think of it all the time when I encounter situations in life where someone doesn't see the obvious, even when it is about to meet them face to face in a big way!
This scene just tickled me to no end!
Oh, nooooo! A Jack Russell Terror. Run away, run away! Well, maybe it would be better to back away slowly....
