CONROE, Texas - A jewelry store owner fired shots at three people who tried to rob him and threatened to kill his mother on Wednesday.

Conroe police said two men and a woman walked into Wilkins Jewelry, 1712 N. Frazier St., about 10:30 a.m. One of the men asked Mitch Wilkins about getting a ring cleaned while the other man and the woman asked Wilkins' 77-year-old mother for help picking something out.

Detectives said the men pulled out guns. Wilkins said he was pistol-whipped.

"He vaulted over this case, and when I turned around he had a pistol in my face," Wilkins said. "He was telling me, 'Don't move. Don't move.'"

The attackers put a gun to Wilkins' mother's head, officials said.

"There was a gun to my face," said Wilkins' mother, Shirley. "(The man was) saying, 'I'll shoot! I'll shoot!' My hands were being held."

Wilkins and his mother both fought back.

"We fell to the ground and he tried to shoot me," Wilkins said.

"I wrestled with her and and I think I broke her finger," Shirley said.

Wilkins said he wrestled the gun away from one of the men. When it fell to his ground, his mother grabbed the gun, handed it to him and he opened fire.

The store owner suffered minor injuries during the fight, but it appeared that no one was wounded by gunfire.

A man and a woman were taken into custody a short time later. They have not been charged, investigators said.

Police said they are looking for the second man. He was described as Hispanic, in his 30s with an average height and build. He was last seen wearing a white shirt and khaki shorts.

Anyone with information is asked to call Montgomery County Crime Stoppers at 800-392-STOP.

The guy who owns the jewelry store, who fought off the robbers, is in another forum I belong to. He posted a message telling us about this experience, first hand:

===================

My wife,Traci, was at home; she crashed her Harley Davidson a week ago Monday last .... and still getting over that; broken wrist, cut on her spleen and a fractured disc. My Dad had yet to show up at the store as he's usually not there till 11, we open at 10:00 and it happened about 10:30 and change.

I grabbed the guy’s pistol hand (not all to well I might add) and the fight was on. All said, at least 6 rounds of .38 special fired there in the front of the store and no one hit, but we’ve not found/examined the one guy that got away; maybe I got lucky. I’ve got staples in my scalp and lots of bruises and knocks from the fight but I’m ok and, so’s my Mother.

They got nothing, not a cent. I shot at them with their own pistol , and ran across two parking lots (mine and the stop-n-go next door to the south) on foot; pistol in hand, and caught them stopped (complete idiots...) at the stoplight with a car both in front and back of them . They did a quick U-turn across traffic and through the car detail place’s parking lot ajacent to the stop’n go where I confronted them trying to get away from me and that’s when I got the license plate #. Two are in custody, caught within blocks of the store, and one at large. The police first thought at least one was wounded but later figured out the blood trail across the two parking lots was mine.

Mike Tyson once said "everyone's got a plan, until they get punched in the face" ... I could'nt agree more. This guy sure had a plan, but it didn't go like he thought it would, I've always "thought" I'd know what to do if robbed, but I forgot all that cool Kung-Foo sh*t I learned on TV the second he stuck that gun in my face. In the end you'll do what you'll do... I fought it out; and I'm lucky to be writing yaw'll this note.

I’m renaming my store “OK Corral Jewelry Co.”

final score: we win.

Oh, and we got this comment on another thread, today:

And... I’m all better now save for some knocks and bangs. We were back open yesterday! Now they’re replacing glass. I’m saving a piece with a bullet hole for the wall.

So glad it ended well for this fellow. His mother is one tough cookie. Good for her, too.

What’s the chance in TX that these guys will be back on the streets before his stitches are out?

I'm not sure I like the attitude in his firt-hand account. Pretty cocky for someone who could easily have been on the wrong end of that .38. And thank God the bad guys didn't have a gun stashed in the getaway car. (That said, I've chased after guys before in the heat of the moment. I found my self staring at a knife doing that!) I'll just chock it up to an emotional high following the incident.

I hope he's budgeting for a shotgun or two and not counting on the next set of punks being incompetent. Another thing a desperate punk might do is start shooting sooner.

I don't like criticizing a citizen who came out in top in an attack like this, but reading that account made me pretty uncomfortable.

It took me a long time to hit "post" on this :/

Yeah. I don’t know if he had a gun of his own in the store and just didn’t have time to get to it. From the way he writes, he seems to understand guns, anyway.

My first reaction was twofold. First, they were darned lucky it turned out well. Second, some people freeze up in an emergency like this. But he and his mother didn’t do that. And they both seem to have handled it well enough in the circumstances.

Yeah on both counts. And you never truly know if you're going to freeze, panic, or act until you're in a situation like that yourself. They did well.

They both didn’t fear - perhaps that is what through off their attackers. They are used to/hoping for submissiveness. Big kudos to mom and son. Hopefully, they will install camera’s and a button behind the counter to a security company.

I didn’t know this and that jewelry store is about a mile from my house. This is upsetting it was so close to me. I’m glad they weren’t hurt.
