This whole thing is BS. We all know the government has wanted control of the Internet. If they control the Internet, they control information.

I'm not poo-pooing the possibility of a cyber attack, I'm poo-pooing the governments concern.

Yes, a cloud is coming.

The last time someone warned of cyber-terror as the biggest threat of our time, we saw jet planes crash into a couple of skyscrapers in Manhattan. Let’s hope history neither rhymes nor repeats.

This is not new news, but it is a convenient distraction from the overwhelming failure in Libya. The other reason that it is being hyped now is that they fear that the internet grab by the progressives may be lost if they can’t induce enough fear to get their internet control bill passed. Yes, it is a serious problem, but it can be addressed without any new laws.

I own and run an IT security company and i dont buy it. Targeted locations sure but not a massive one. Simply too many different systems. There are ways to effect large numbers but thats not dependent on single companies.

My question is— if there is some massive event, what will happen to/with the army? Will they all just go AWOL and start looting? Or will we just have martial law?

I can't answer your question, but I know this. The government is underestimating the intelligence of those they (are supposed to)serve.

If the police, military, anybody with a uniform knows that their paycheck isn’t coming on Friday what do you think they will do?
Then it all comes down to personal morality and sense of responsibility. And their commitment to defend their own families!

why not block the Internet international access from suspect countries, at the gateways

They've been operating inside our country for years. Remember that old 1990-something map of terrorist cells?

Here is a link which has a short scenario peering into that kind of event:
