Catholic Bishops Call Biden A Liar On ObamaCare
IBD EDITORIALS ^ | October 15, 2012

ObamaCare: The leaders of the vice president's church are calling him out for denying the Affordable Care Act's threat to religious liberty and the institutions that provide needed social services.

As we noted in our post-debate analysis, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) were not amused with Joe Biden's other great debate lie — that ObamaCare doesn't threaten religious liberty or the ability of churches, particularly the Catholic Church, to put their faith in action.

On Oct. 12, the USCCB denounced the VP's deceptive comments, noting that the so-called HHS exemption is a farce that unconstitutionally defines what a religious institution is and what government will allow it to do.

That exemption, the USCCB states, "does not extend to 'Catholic social services, Georgetown hospital, Mercy hospital, any hospital' (as Biden claimed), or any other religious charity that offers its services to all, regardless of the faith of those served."

In other words, Joe Biden, a Catholic himself, lied.

As Paul Ryan, also a Catholic, put it to Biden, the Obama administration was "infringing upon our first freedom, the freedom of religion, by infringing on Catholic charities, Catholic churches, Catholic hospitals."

If that weren't so, Ryan said after one of Biden's 82 interruptions, "Why would they keep suing you?"

This was a reference to a series of suits filed against the Obama administration by a wide variety of high-profile Catholic organizations, including the Archdiocese of Washington, D.C., and the University of Notre Dame.

So, do we believe a sitting Vice President, or the American College of Bishops, I guess that´s pretty easy. Someone´s pants are on fire.

Couldn’t the administration just purchase some indulgences...and what is the going rate for indulgences these days?

In our society, calling someone a liar is just so extreme. It crosses a line. It's about the most insulting thing you can do. We know that a lot of people tell lies, but no one calls them on it, because it's just so taboo.

I'm really hoping Mitt Romney calls Obama a liar on national TV.

I was getting mad, then I read your last line!

It’s an interesting thought, why is calling a lie a lie so taboo?

Then there are excuses, one old preacher I knew said, “An excuse is the skin of a reason stuffed with a lie.”

Amen.

No indulgences unless you're in a state of grace; no state of grace unless you've repented and confessed your sins. This is not going to work out for Biden.

Where's Lori? Where's Wuerl? Where's Biden's Bishop, Malooly?

Hard to really say, but I would offer this --

Modern society is built upon worldliness, vanity, and pride. We've built our own Tower of Babel in our vast societies of "heaven on earth". We try to make ourselves happy by buying things. We try to make others happy by funding big government programs. It's all empty. Very empty. So many of us are alienated. We have trouble with friendships in the modern world. Many families are deeply fractured -- but still we persist in an unnatural level of self-esteem and pride in all we have, and in all we think we have accomplished.

If anyone starts to say "The emperor has no clothes" or "You're living a lie" ... well, then ... that just might bring the whole world crashing down around our ears. That would be ... uncomfortable. So, please, don't use the "L-word".

It’s good to hear the church has tightened up the requirements. Vatican II ?

If the Church is serious, they could dump Biden, Pelosi, and a slew of others who brought this about.

They won’t

I suspect it’s a matter of the “half a loaf” problem. The church seems to be willing to settle for half a loaf (nominal Catholics in high political office), rather than risk making Catholics unelectable, by holding them to Church doctrine. If that’s so, it doesn’t seem to be working out too well.

(1) These have always been the requrements. A person not in a state of grace can't receive any spiritual benefit, period.

(2)Vatican II convened exactly 50 years ago. Looking for recent news flashes? You have some catching up to do.

The rich in the middle ages used the buying of indulgences as Catholics use confession today. The church has a history of corruption, that’s fine, we’re all humans doing the best we can, hopefully. Morality either lives between your ears or it doesn’t, irrespective of poly, mono, or no deity worship.

I'd heard about that guy Tetzel. You'll notice he's not considered a saint!

Nevertheless, if anybody told them they could buy indulgences instead of repenting and confessing, they were told a lie. In the Middle Ages people got penances like reciting the Penitential Psalms, fasting, and almsgiving. Also ransoming captives, going on pilgrimages, or fighting the Muslims who had invaded and occupied the Holy Land. The Crusades were, in a sense, armed pilgrimages, and often involved indulgences. G'night now, gorush.

They’re calling Biden a liar? They’ll just have to get in line behind everyone else who’s calling Biden the same...

You make an interesting case, but it could be as simple as the fact that a taboo against calling a lie a lie benefits liars and disadvantages the honest.

Dims rely on lies. The Father of Lies is the source of most of their policies and methods. Of course the left would want and set about creating such a taboo.
