New School Meal Rules Trigger Protests, Boycotts

Among the most popular protests is one from students at the very small Wallace County High in Sharon Springs, Kansas. Students created a parody of "We Are Young," by Fun. In "We Are Hungry," they bemoan the calorie limits set by the new regulationsa maximum of 850 calories for high school lunches. (Since first posting the song last month, the students have added a message acknowledging that they are excited about the opportunity to eat more fruits and vegetables, but insisting that the meals they are served at school are too small.) Their YouTube video has about a million views. At a high school in New Jersey, students boycotted school lunches for several days. A high school principal in Wisconsin told The New York Times that school meal participation is down 70 percent this school year.

This is probably about right for a 45 year old like me, but teenage boys who participate in football/basketball/wrestling/etc. amd work out every day need 5000 calories or more.
I always laugh at that left wing group that attacks Burger King's mega-size meals that have 2500 or so calories. The target market for these meals is teenage boys; they need a lot more calories than the rest of us.
The first comment on the article at the site is very, very telling about the true goal of these actions.
Ration children’s food essentially to deal with the “high coast of health care... and a simple, effective and appropriate part of the solution.”
Kenyan Public Schools
> I took my own lunch to school.
If you to that today, they’ll just take it away from you, give you 2 chicken nuggets and some celery stalks.
unfortunately, undernourished children rack up a lot more health care costs.
. . .and a condom. . .
Obviously, this is a sideways means to cut costs in school. I’ve got a great plan. Don’t serve food anymore in school, sack the cooks. Let the parents be responsible for sending kids to school with lunch, and it can be whatever they want.
Silly, I know.
“Ration childrens food essentially to deal with the high coast of health care...”
That’s why government health care is such a holy grail for the left. Once you control that, there isn’t a thing you can’t “regulate” in the name of health.
The reason this will never happen is that school funding is at least partially tied to the number of students eating school lunch.
This is an eternal rule: You will always get more of what you reward. If schools are rewarded for kids eating school lunch, you can bet they'll hold on to it.
I watched the same thing happen with busing. When part of school funding got tied to the number of students riding the bus, suddenly they were busing students who live much closer to the school.
Makes you wonder what would happen if school funding was based on median ACT/SAT scores of graduating students!
Swim star Michael Phelps fuelled by 12,000 calorie a day diet
By lunchtime though Phelps, who is contesting eight events in Beijing, needs refuelling.
That comes in the form of half a kilo of enriched pasta, two large ham and cheese sandwiches on white bread with mayonnaise, and nearly 1,000 calories worth of energy drinks.
