Obama had the best of both worlds: He took office when gas was below $2 a gallon saving the nation billions of dollars and when the novel techniques of fracking and horizontal drilling had just tripled known U.S. reserves and promised to offer a godsend of new energy on federal lands.
In other words, the future seemed to be all Barack Obamas. Bill Clintons second term offered an easy blueprint of what bipartisan centrism might achieve. Balance the budget and create jobs, and the nation will forgive anything, from lying under oath to romancing an intern in the Oval Office.
And what happened?
Barack Obama chose to ram down the nations throat a polarizing, statist agenda, energized by the sort of hardball politics he had learned in Chicago. Rather than bring the races, classes, and genders together, he gave us an us-versus-them crusade against the 1 percenters and the job creators who had not paid their fair share, accusations of a Republican war on women, and the worst racial polarization in modern memory. Statesmanship degenerated into chronic blame-gaming and Bush did it, as he piled up over $5 trillion in new debt. Financial sobriety was abandoned in favor of creating new entitlement constituencies, and job creation was deemed far less important than nationalizing the health-care system.
And so here we are, three weeks before the election, with a squandered presidency and a president desperately seeking reelection not by defending his record, but by demonizing his predecessor, his opponent and half of the country.

Spot on.
A squandered presidency is not the point. Obama never intended to do anything to advance the country in the first place. His goal was clearly to bring it down, an objective that he has sadly accomplished.
Really puts into perspective how horribly Obama has bollixed
up the country when you read what he REALLY inherited, not what he says he inherited. As Hanson (too kindly) says:
What, then, was Obamas first term?
Jimmy Carters ends justifying Richard Nixons means.
Absolutely agree with every word!
“...will forgive anything, from lying under oath to romancing an intern in the Oval Office”
I don’t think what that pig did could possibly be defined as ‘romance’ ugh!
Agreed. It’s like saying Mohammed Atta squandered an earlybird flight with a meal and a movie.
I think perhaps a similarly polite word that is more accurate is ‘seducing’. I would use different phraseology ... one good reason why VDH writes columns and I do not. :-)
He is a communist radical, an enemy of the US, and sworn to destroy the US. I agree he did not “squander” it — his goal was our destruction in four years.
Lest we forget, he's had a lot of help along the way. Virtually every Democrat, everybody that voted for his health care plan, is an accomplice to his actions.
In essence, his goals and the goals of the DNC are one in the same - destruction of our constitutional republic in favor of a communist dictatorship. They seem to believe that they can do it better than the USSR did.
Squandered? Depends on which side you’re on. For our enemies, it’s been a very successful presidency.
bkmk
It’s almost inconceivable, but in the 1950s, some of the biggest communist fighters were Democrats in the House and Senate - JFK, Pat McCarran (NV), Thomas Dodd (CT - father of you know who), Eastland (MS), Sam Ervin (NC), Philip Hart (MI).
Well thought out and well written, as usual.
Basically, according to them, Obama was a bi-racial, non-partisan internationalist idealist, not really “black”, not really “white”, who just wanted to heal the deeply divided D.C. And the easy going choom gang Hawaiian was compromising his skinny ass off until the Tea Party shows up...and proceeded to suck the hope and change out of his good heart and pure soul. What's left is a standard issue cynical Democrat. (OK...I exaggerate ...but not much.)
Noonan welcomed Obama with a wink and an orgasm.
