President Obama has failed to seal the deal for a second term exactly three weeks from election day. His weak performance in the first debate squandered an edge that his campaign and Bill Clinton worked hard to establish over the summer and opened the door for a come-from-behind victory by Mitt Romney.
With the campaign at a tipping point, the president must go beyond his negative attack ads and give voters a positive reason to support him. He needs to explain what hes learned from his years in office and exactly what a second Obama term would look like. And he has to display far more toughness than he has up to now.
That, in essence, is how three of the Democratic Partys most seasoned and savvy strategists see the 2012 presidential contest.

Imagine Obama relying on himself to save his own bacon? Not to mention the bacon of thousands of his minions?
Hah!
Step up? It would have been better if he steps down.
Bleeuuuy, the Balloon has burst.
Its pretty late in the game for him to tell voters what he would do in a second term.
Bush promised to reform Social Security but nothing came of it. And partisan gridlock is likely to derail any second term Obama initiatives.
Where’s the beef? Voters are still looking for a reason why they should give him another four years in the White House.
I think he's already done that. Phones, cheaper health care, lower taxes, create jobs. That's what he claims he'll do. What more reason does LATimes think needs to be given? On the foreign policy end, he'll bring peace to the mideast, and our foes will turn to allies. Iran won't get the bomb, etc.
Obama having to run on his record and describe why he should be re-elected in terms that do not involve “because the other guy sucks” is pretty much a best case scenario for Romney.
“...squandered an edge that his campaign and Bill Clinton worked hard to establish....”
Must have been a “bit loss” in my computer.
Should read:”... squandered an edge that his campaign and Bill Clinton, convicted purgerer, disbarred lawyer, and impeached president worked hard to establish...”
There, fixed.
“...explain what hes learned from his years in office....”
Not accomplished.
So he's going to lie then, right?
Hard to sell failure and destruction of the USA. Step up and do what? Sell demise to American citizens?
He didn’t get a bounce from Clinton, he got a boing. And a soft one at that. Went down just about as quickly as it went up.
When I think of Bill Clinton, I want to purge, too, but Bill was impeached for perjury, making him a “perjurer”
They should have stopped right there - the rest follows.
Step up to what?
Obama can’t reach the step.
He’s coasted his whole life as a slacker and he will forever be a slacker.
Not accomplished.
Exactly.
I like what Newt said. Do you want four more years of obama just like four years of obama?
Hey, ‘rats & lefties, this is about as “up” as 0bama CAN “step”.
Hah! LOL!
“If you want to keep getting what you’re getting, just keep on doing what you’re doing!”
Ugh.
