A policeman faced an investigation today for tasering a blind man in the street after he mistook his white stick for a Samurai sword.
Former company director Colin Farmer, 61, was hit in the back by 50,000 volt stun device and then handcuffed whilst on his way to met friends for a drink in his local pub.
Police had earlier been dispatched after reports of a man roaming around Chorley town centre in Lancs armed with a sword.
A patrolman spotted stroke victim Mr Farmer walking down the street using his white stick to get around and wrongly assumed he was the swordsman.

He must not have watched the blind guy for very long before pulling out the tazer.
The police spin this as supportive concern for the man's welfare. Others might look at this as intimidation and a message of what could happen if the family causes the police any trouble.
Sounds like the police officer doesn’t see much better than his victim.

Didn’t there used to be a blind guy with a sword? Martial arts stuff? Can’t recall the name of it but he could catch things thrown at him by sensing them coming. Maybe cop had seen that show.

Difference is that, in many places of this country (USA), failing to instantly obey a police officer’s command to halt while “armed” with a white stick will, at the very least, get you shot, and more likely, shot dead, vice just being tasered.
This will be followed by a police department internal investigation that, after a very long time, finds, while they are very sorry about it all, correct police procedures were followed “because the officer feared for his or her life” and no punishment or liability attends the mistaken action.
The only way your family can even seek redress is to essentially bankrupt themselves in taking the city/county/state/federal government to court and hope for some sort of accountability/justice/compensation in an adversarial legal system heavily weighted towards the wealthy and the State while the ever so slowly turning “Wheels of Justice” process pulverizes what remains of their lives.
In other words, you can be mistakenly shot dead by the police while committing no life-threatening offense and, except in the most obvious and indisputable cases (i.e., the ones caught on video), it’s pretty much okay with the police and the supervising civil authorities.
Swell.

Even if a guy walking with a sword and not making threatening gestures the first move a cop should make is simply ask some questions....
My son was thinking about becoming a cop but with stories like these he really did not want to be associated with this group......
