I think the whole thing started in 1980 when Republicans feared a last-minute release of the Iran hostages by Carter just before the election but that never materialized. In fact, Reagan was accused of making a secret deal with the Iranians not to release the hostages until after the election (which was eventually debunked). However, the results of the election was not affected either way.
Probably the closest an "October Surprise" had to affecting an election (actually November) was in 2000 when Bush's DUI was released but still, Bush was able to beat Gore.
It is questionable whether or not that DUI announcement had any affect on the race. Bush immediately got in front of it and admitted to the DUI and in my opinion, it did not have much of an impact. That race was going to be close no matter what.
Personally, I feel that November's election is decided by mid-October as people have pretty much made up their minds by now. Therefore, I believe that both Romney and Obama are reasonably confident about how November 6 will go from them by way of their internal polling. Remember, the best pollsters work directly for the candidates and the public will never see those polls. So look at what the candidates are actually doing. Obama is campaigning in NH and IA and planning a low-key election night party which tells you pretty much all you need to know about the state of this race.
Don't think the release of damaging documents by some rogue website are going to have any material impact at this point.
Its the same kind of Internet Pranksters that come up with web sites showing that this celebrity died in a sledding accident in the Alps..you see those every week pop up..so I am taking this nonsense with a grain of salt too. That combined with the Fact that the Clinton’s know that 4 more Years of this Muslim Terrorist stabbing America in the back will destroy any chance she has of winning the Presidency in 2016! Their chances are much better with a Romney Incumbent

When has Obama been honest about ANYTHING??
It’s too early for a real Obama smear tactic. There will be something from the Obama camp I’m pretty sure, but look for it maybe Thur. afternoon before the election. That way it will make the headlines Thur. night and Fri., but Romney’s denials will only be covered on the weekend when a lot of people really don’t watch the news. My guess is the fake surprise will be:
1) Romney has an illegitimate child
2) Romney sold pot to someone in college (yes, the irony is too much, but it will be a bombshell anyway).
3) A low level campaign worker from years ago will say she had an affair with Romney.
There will be zero proof, but the liberal media will start each story by saying “it’s being reported”, and thus won’t have to offer proof since they’re just reporting what’s being reported.
They’ve already tried the homophobic bully routine, and that didn’t stick. Something 4 or 5 days before the election might stick long enough to do damage.
